Cool Windemere Speed Limit - Does Anyone Care?

We always like talking about speed limits, well take the new speed limit on the Lake ...... what do you reckon?

Personally I think EVERYONE should slow down, wherever they are and whatever they drive ................. the idea that you have the RIGHT to travel at whatever speed you like is crap!! Its the same as the Chavette who thinks she has the RIGHT to have 10 sproggs and have US look after them!!

SLOW DOWN its Anti-Social!!

10MPH?

Some boats were travelling at over 100mph!!! Holy crap!

They are threatening to ignore the law!

Agreed. But what is wrong with half of the lake being 10mph and the other half unlimited? Surely its big enough for everyone to enjoy.
Same old suits with toss all to do except inflict their draconian opinions on everyone. Bet no one on the council owns a jet ski.
I hope tourism there goes down the pan. Daz

Thumbs down

Just another case of the Nanny State

If you were on the lake you should be aware that there are fast boats out there and act accordingly. There are plenty of lakes with speed limits – if you don’t want speed, go on a different lake.

People won’t take any responsibility for their actions anymore and part of those actions is going on a lake with fasts boats (or a road for that matter) and they should be aware that **** can and will happen.

More people die of bowel cancer each year than being killed in speed related accidents – so in light of that fact the government have cut spending on research as its obviously not much of a problem, or is it that it cost money to do this, but the speed cameras just keep bringing in the money

Only on Scoobynet would someone link Bowel Cancer to Speed Cameras!!

I think splitting the lake would have been a fair result - but, I must say, JetSkis are the pain in the **** of the water ..... all JetSkis should be banned and crushed!!

I can't work out if you are on here just to wind people up or not. You are either a traffic cop, traffic warden or a wheel clamper.
What's wrong with people having fun? Comes in various shapes and forms you know, a bit like your jigsaws.

Fun is fine, as long as it doesn't affect anyone else in a negative way.

People are fed up with anti-social behaviour .......

There are plenty of places in the Lake District where you can go for peace and quiet - from memory, Windermere is the only lake which doesn't (yet) have a limit. Pressure for the limit seems to be from "incomers" who don't care about powerboat users/waterskiers etc or the many, many people who make their living from supporting those people. I think the powerboat lobby is really just after a fair crack of the whip. (And I'm a sailor and I don't like powerboats....)

I would be more concerned with antisocial behaviour that actually really does affect people.

Drug dealing, robbery, joyriding ect, rather than the poor sap whos travelled all the way up to Windermere, (pumping cash into the area) just to have a bit of harmless fun on his jet ski, getting clocked at 13mph. Trust me, there are more pressing issues.

Perhaps its just a pet hate you have, which you are perfectly entitled to. Mine is councils or governments that try inflicting their narrow minded opinions on others, based on their own personal experiences, rather than sensibly looking at the whole picture.

As I said, I hope tourism there now goes down the pan. Daz

Hi Pete
All I was doing was doing was illustrating the point that the government are less keen to help save lives if the outcome means that they have to spend money in the process and are eager to jump on the high moral ground of “speed kills” when it generates them large amounts of revenue.

As plenty of people have said there are other lakes which can be used for sailing wind surfing etc but once again the powers that be have reinforced the message that speeding is a bad thing which people find antisocial. So rather than allowing it in a controlled area and make everybody aware of the dangers, they chose to ban it.

We both know that speeding isn’t bad – improper use of speed however is.

But then you know all of this anyway

Note to self – don’t feed the trolls

New measures have been put in place to detect people breaking the law on the lake:

10mph is warp factor compared to the 4mph speed limit we have on the canals...

I certainly don't know all the facts about this one but can have sympathy with the ones that have a business there.
When i was there last June and the water ski guy said today i have a business and come the speed limit enforcement i don't.

Personally I prefer the Gold propeller blades to the other colours available.

PMSL at that piccy above to hehe

Each to their own as far as speed goes ... if everyone stuck to speed limits I suspect the country would grind to a halt.. We all do it at some point any way whether we be young/old it doesn't matter.
I wont get started on the speeding / speed cameras debate. I think they are a good idea to bring down speeds at proven accident blackspots. However this now seems to have been repaced by a policy of sticking them anywhere to raise revenue which is a shame IMHO.

I can't remember when the last accident was on Windermere.

Another case of the Lake District National Park Authority trying to kill itself again.

10MPH? You can do that in a canoe... (probably)

Damn! I thought I might get away with it. For some strange reason I couldn't find a picture of Windermere that was suitable.

Probably could just about.

Certainly you could in a sailing boat, and definately on a windsurfer.....

Are they going to stop people windsurfing at more than 10mph though?
I think not.

Surely noise regulations would be a better plan.
That said, if they did, some loon would think up a 400hp electric outboard

Jetskis btw - very true. IMO, owned by the biggest bunch of R'soles ever. (Generally speaking - not everyone, that is) Scrap the lot of them

Yet another rule telling us how we can live and what we should and shouldn't do.

It's an utter disgrace, what of the boating/water skiing industry?
What of sheer enjoyment and exhilaration?

What next?

Do gooding gone insane again.

I've windsurfed on a few lakes in the lake district in the past and didn't even go out unless i was exceeding 10 mph and never got pulled funnily enough.
I mean who would try to stop you ?
The guy who drives the launch (me think not)

Damn you! I had photoshop loading in the background ready to do exactly this!

You need calibration lines painted on the bed of the lake though.

I'm a member of the BWSF and have read with interest their side of the argument.
The view is that a blanket limit was totally unnecessary and that either areas of the lake could have been designated for 'faster' boats.
As with most of these things though members of recognised bodies are rarely the problem and I can see that the 'un-regulated' element may well have spoiled it for the rest of us.
It's a great shame, it was a fantastic place to ski and a great competition venue.
