I rate this series as being up there with "Buffy". Buffy, which I love, is a show which has managed to be consistently different, original, non-mainstream programming while nonetheless generating viewing figures which puts almost any other non-mainstream programme to shame. And it's done so while amassing an impressive array of critical plaudits, and generating an appreciable market for spin-off products. Long live the Dr.

As to how many there have been, well we've seen more than 12 on screen(including the spoof ones) or if you want the sad whovian stance in the Brain of morbius the Dr is involved in a mental battle with Morbius and we see several of the old Dr's previous regens(not seen in episodes). Of course many argue that is'nt the case and so it goes on.
The answer to how many can there be, is simple. As many as the BBC want.
Supposedly there can only be 12 regenerations, but there are loads of instances where this has been gotten around. So if they want to make a 14th doctor then i'm sure the writers will come up with some plot device to make it so.

Yes, but its not real, it based on ratings, if the Doctor re-appaers after 14 times who is going to care apart from a few 30-40 year old social misfit virgins ?
Even they will ignore the slight fictional innacuracy to keep the dream alive, when you give up on ******** a lady and all you have left is Doctor Who, why complain about a time lord being innacurate ?

I thought it was 12 regenerations - which would mean 13 Doctors.
Without following any links IIRC in order they were William Hartnell, Partick Troughton, John Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy from the first series. There was Paul (?) McGann in a few episodes a few years back, so with Cushing from the films, I guess I'd support Geezer's numbers.
Of course, there have been quite a few instances of more than one actor playing the same human, who doesn't have regenerations, so why should it matter for Doctor Who?
Was tonight's any good? Didn't catch it.

Tonights episode was superb, but back on topic.
There's lots of ways it could be done, but not very many that would be satisfying emotionally, and yet there are some of those too. The problem is that the series has already taken a very strong stance on "Immmmortality!" and how it's a bad thing, and it's not something the Doctor would aspire to having. (That's the Master's game.) So to me, the only way to do it honestly is to have the extra regenerations forced on the Doctor against his will. Who or what does that to him could be anything, preferably some new agency, but if you're looking for an old one that could do it just as an example, well... maybe the White Guardian could decide the Doctor's too important to the safety of the universe and gives him another batch of regenerations whether he wants them or not (and to make it more interesting, he doesn't tell him how many he's given him). Or going the other way, you could have the Doctor truly turn evil on the 12th regeneration when the Valeyard body merges in with the main one, and then the evil Doctor is in charge for a few episodes and, being evil, he goes and gets himself loads of more regenerations... but something goes wrong in the process and a regeneration turns on right away and the new Doctor is good again (or perhaps the companion and other good guys kill the evil one).
So, there's plenty of ways this could be done without violating established rules, and that could make things potentially interesting for the plus-13 Doctors. It just takes a bit of care and thought is all. You see jye, I'm loved for my opinion on SN whether I talk about Doctor Who or sad little scotsmen on hills.

That said he could just park up the Tardis on the planet Karn
home to the Mystic sisterhood who's sacred flame produces the Elixir of life
(From the Brain of Morbius) Tom Baker era 1976
Karn is also in the same Galaxy as Galifrey and Shada
