Question eBay\paypal charges. OK to pass on to the buyer???

I'm looking into signing up for a paypal account so buyers can pay for stuff on ebay using a credit card. The paypal charges for this i believe are 3.4%+20p of the transaction.

Is it acceptable (i.e. the done thing) to pass this cost onto the buyer if they want to use paypal (I do accept other payment methods like cheque\PO), or do I just take the hit?

I usually put a note at the bottom of my auctions

"Paypal accepted, although buyers wishing to use this please add 4% to final price to cover fees"

It's up to them then, more often than not its still less hassle than sorting a cheque and writing a letter

I know some people cover the costs by inflating the P&P costs or actually ask that you do include and extra £5 or 3% or whatever to cover the costs. Personally I don't bother and accept that the fees come out of my profit, but then I don't buy / sell huge amounts on ebay either.

I thought eBay had ammended their T&C's to prevent sellers from doing this? (i.e End price is the same to the buyer regardless of their chosen method of payment?)

Ebay pull auctions where the seller tries to add paypal fees onto the winner if it's reported.

Loads of people still do it, though.

If you don't want to be hit with the charges then don't accept paypal - simple.

As Kelvin has pointed out and found, it is totally against eBay policies to surcharge for accepting PayPal.

More and more listings are being pulled for this breach.

PayPals charges are also different depending on the amount that you run through your account too. You need to apply for Merchant rates first to qualify.

I will NOT buy from anyone who surcharges for it on principal.
I dont surcharge myself so others shouldnt- it is against the T&C.

On high priced items (like a couple of hundred quid upwards) i may remove paypal logos from the listing and put in the description it is not offered, but available if you wish to pay the charges. Not the same as surchaging, and its once in a blue moon i list something of enough value to warrant that.

I increase my postage a small amount to contribute towards fees etc which is perfectly acceptable, but thats it. Its otherwise accepted as an overhead and items are priced (i only ever sell as 'buy it nows') accordingly to cover these overheads+profit.

Thanks for the link, that'll be a no then! I'm not selling goods worth £000's, so the most i'll loose out on is a few quid. I think I'll sign up for it for ease of payment.

Thanks!

???

Whats the difference if you sell one high value item at £200 and add that paypal is available if you want to pay a surcharge AND me selling 200 items at a pound and charging a surcharge of 3%?

Principals?

You will not be have any 'seller protection' if you surcharge fees.

Its not offered, and the logos arent inserted in the listing as for large value items i prefer cheque or cash anyway!
Its mentioned as 'available' simply because if i dont put that then people will mail asking if you will take paypal- its available if the buyer doesnt want the hassle of doing a cheque, but id rather not accept it for said items

There is a very big difference between the two you mention.

It's still a surcharge!!

You're just letting them pay outside of the links provided by ebay.

I always take paypal and never charge any extra, as above I just accept it comes out of my fees. May seem trivial but if I have to **** around going to the bank to pay a cheque in my time would have cost more than the paypal fee anyway!
