as above
sat down to watch breakfast tv and the picture went followed by sound.
thought it was the fuse so let the dog out and got the old fluke meter.
Fuse checks out ok so i look back at the tv -still nowt
looks down the vent at the back to se the little orange glow you get down the back of a tv-ah sorted thinks i- hang on its unplugged.
moment of sudden clarity -oh ****.
tv out the door at a rate of knots now on patio and smoking like a good un
2 gallons of water later still not out
so know im out the back at half 6 trying to smash the back off the tv to get at it with the old dry powder extinguisher clouds of smoke everywhere with the odd flame or 2-god knows how many of the neighbours i woke.
finally put out.
was a bush widescreen about 6 year old so if youve got one be aware
could do without this much adrenaline this early

happened to my friend's sister. unfortunately it was at night, she was in bed asleep and they now owe their lives to their smoke detector!

already is with DMTech according to somone in the local Comet store. they had recalled all their 17" widescreen LCDs with built in DVD players apparently and then when someone went to buy the screen without the DVD, they got to the till and were told "sorry, we can't sell you that one either, they've all been recalled..."

TVs catching fire is quite a common thing - especially CRT of pretty much any make
Being electro-magnetic devices, they create lots of electrostantic energy. So they are very powerful dust magnets.
A good few years usage can have layers of dust built up on the internal components measuring millimetres thick. All it needs is for a dust covered component to overheat through a fault and off it goes up in flames.
I had my fair share of computer monitors that have caught fire in a similar way too.
Something I noticed on my newish TV in my bedroom though (thomson) is that it has no vents on it at all....presumably heat dissapation is no longer a problem and this is to prevent dust getting inside (probably cheaper to make too
