Tonight after a hard day I looked into the cupboard to find one of these. Looked at the instructions and thought " Ideal. 25- 30 mins kids will be in bed I can get some health food down my neck". Oven on pie in kids to bed. 30 mins later I have a burnt crust and about 4 layers of what appears to be uncooked pastry. Result,............ a salad. Any ideas on how to improve on this?

Fray Bentos pies are like ambrosia. They have a damned sight more real meat in than any other ready made pie Ive ever eaten (and Ive eaten a lot of pies!); in fact, I wouldnt eat another ready made pie.....

They're better than the 'princess' alternative.
The quality of meat in them's not bad at all, in general.
Anyway, ********* are a delicacy in many countries![Wink](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/wink.gif)
As an aside, I used to work with a (fat/single) bloke who used to bring in to work a packed lunch. He'd mash up a cooked FB steak and kidney pie (a full 'un) and stuff it all into a full bagguette with tomato sauce. All cold.........

we sold a brand new house about 8 or 9 years ago where the owner put a Fray Bentos pie in the oven over the Christmas period. Our offices were closed for the holidays and when we came back to work in the New Year, my colleague who had been monitoring and responding to emergency telephone messages said she had received a call from a purchaser on Boxing Day (IIRC), saying that there was a problem with his oven. Apparently the door had blown off and as the kitchen door was open at the time, the kitchen AND hallway (including the new carpet and some of the spindles on the stairs) had been redecorated by Mr Bentos himself. Allegedly he forgot to pierce the tin or remove the lid or something, but having never cooked a fray bentos pie myself I can't be sure that's the correct diagnosis.
Anyone done that before?

Girl at work didn't know how to use a pressure cooker properly and I think she pulled off pressure valve on top of lid in mid-cook and decorated the kitchen ceiling
Always thought Pukka pies are quite good? DL

Quality FPMSL, I can see him now gravy running down his chin.
I have the Steak and Ale once in a while with a tin of beans, i know its crap but it does taste nice every now and then.
The problem could be your oven, I used to burn the top of mine, got a new oven at Christmas and they now cook perfectly.

Flip - this brings back memories.
As a student in Leeds, Fray Bentos was part of the staple diet in our house. Just got back, year 3, new house. Couple of weeks in, decided its time for dinner so on goes the oven. Heats up, get my pie and stick it in, middle shelf. Kind of forget it's there as the timer is on. All lads watching TV (Neighbours probably), when suddenly BANG! Scared the crap out of everyone and we rush to the kitchen. There is the oven, which having jumped a foot forward, is smoking. The oven door has flopped open and the glass is cracked though not broken. Smoke is coming from inside, and the remains of a Fray Bentos pie are scattered over the opposite wall and throughout the entire oven. The middle shelf is almost not there - most of the 'spokes' have been detached from the frame, as the power of the exploding tin can did so much damage, this shelf and the one below were beyond repair.
Yes, I had forgotten to do anything (like read the instructions to remove the lid) even though I had done this plenty of times before. The force of the explosion was amazing - to do so much damage was create so much chaos was fantastic. Except when we'd stopped wetting ourselves and I realised there was only one culprit who would have to clean up.
We never did get the over clean again, or indeed replace the over shelf. And from then on, whatever you cooked always had a slight after-tatse of some burnt steak and kidney pie....
