EU is forced to reveal 'obscenely high' salaries

13-06-2005

Civil servants on the Brussels gravy train now earn £70,000 a year after tax. And that's just for starters. The European Commission, by instinct bashful about its generous perks and allowances, was forced to disclose the figure, and much more, in response to a written question from a Czech MEP.

The Commission admitted that its officials, who number nearly 20,500, are entitled to seven separate allowances over and above their pay, plus a generous pension scheme after just 10 years' service.

As I said before, it is one of the most corrupt governmental organisations going. If you pay your minions that kind of money then they are far more likely to do just what they are told without question, and its not your money that you are throwing away anyway. Thank goodness for the Dutch and French referendum votes.

Its a bit like wanting to pay the top policemen up to a £30,000 bonus just for doing the jobs for which they are already getting a high salary. That would tend to kill any independence that the force might have.

Wouldn't anyone expect to get paid for doing those things? Makes you wonder about the balance of the report from the UKIP...

Fair enough, you would expect to get paid for some of those, but in these folks worked in private companies they wouldn't be getting paid half their basic salaries anyway, and the bonuses & perks would be considerably lower too.
The fundamental problem with socialist governments of any persuasion is that the more they try to control the way you live, the more it costs you the taxpayer as they pile on yet more unnecessary tiers of flunkeys & enforcers

Well, if its so easy and so lucrative, I expect all of YOU to be on the books within a month or two!!

Fact is, only a few are considered good enough ................ Beckham earns MUCH more than a footballer who turns out for MableThorpe on a Saturday.

Its the way it is - climb aboard if you think you're good enough!! Most of you on here can't even spell

If you think it is good enough to extract all these stealth taxes and then **** it all against the wall by throwing it at unlimited quangos and jobs for the boys, building up a huge and incompetent bureaucracy, giving it to weird organisations stiff with PC idiots, and making such impressive pronouncements which never actually come to anything, then you are certainly in the right place PSL!

"The Commission admitted that its officials, who number nearly 20,500, are entitled to seven separate allowances over and above their pay, plus a generous pension scheme after just 10 years' service.

The average take-home pay of £70,000 is based on the income of an "A" grade Eurocrat - one who can draft new laws, for example - who is married with two children and in the middle of his or her career. "

And out of 20 500 officials, how many of the above are there? Anyone know?

"British Gas employees earn 80k per year". Nice headline, but (as people on here say) typical spin.

"School fees: reimbursement of up to £150 a month "doubled in certain cases". " Great, so up to £3600 per year. I just wrote a cheque for my son's school fees for 12 000 euros, 9000 pounds, as that's pretty much the only English-language school in the area. If people are getting 35% of their school fees reimbursed, I don't really see what the fuss is about. Most private companies appear to reimburse 100% without question, when I talk to others round here.

As for the "And they get all the Belgian bank holidays" - er, they're in Belgium, why shouldn't they?

BTW Les, you've just accused 20 000 people of corruption. I doubt you've ever met one of them, and you certainly don't seem to have a clue about what they do. That's quite a sweeping charge. I've met many of them, and although there are certainly some total arseholes, as in all walks of life, most seem to be very intelligent, decent people trying to do a job. Oddly, the only corruption I've really seen is from a British company based near Bristol who paid a Mongolian 2000USD to vote for them in a contract tender, supposedly to keep a few jobs in Britain rather than letting them go to a (shock horror) furrin company.

As for how to apply - well, you need to speak at least one other European language, be able to work in a multicultural environment, and (just like any job applicant) know something about your future employer. So that's 99% of SN fecked for starters.

I was addressing those remarks to PSL Brendan, and they were actually aimed at what is happening in this country.

However, when I think about the behaviour of the Eu Commission and their accounts, the way so many MEP's cheat the system with their travel allowances and 10 minute attendance on a Friday in order to collect their allowances for that day, and the rubber stamp style of running the Eu Parliament with restricted time for an MEP to speak, and in particlular the parlous state of the CAP, then maybe a lot of what I said can also be applied to the Eu as it is. France and Germany have been attempting to run it all for their own selfish and greedy requirements.

I think the statement made all those years ago by Jean Monnet, who was the prime mover of an EU federation, and which has been well publicised recently, gives the lie in the first place since it is all about conning the peoples of the Eu nations over a period of years to give up their countries' sovereignties to a central Eu government. This is exactly what has been happening of course.

We all know that governments are never perfect, but there is a limit which the public will accept, and this was recently demonstrated in the referendums.

What about the guy who filmed people walking in to claim their bonus for the day then walked out again five minutes later ? It is a **** off big pisstaking gravy train and everyone knows it. It benefits England none at all and it has truely screwed the German economy. If ever someone deserved to be shot its MEPS and associated money grabbing klingons. And yes I have met some.

Yes he is certainly predictable as you say Brendan. Looks like we were talking about different posts which adds to the confusion of course.

In the first one I was criticising the Brussels "gravy train" which I still believe to be unjustifiable. I did not accuse all the 20.500 of them of actual corruption but was complaining about the system which is likely to encourage it.

Re corruption. Some years ago - working for a UK Government agency - I submitted a tender to EEC for oil supplies to a country in West Africa, a few million $$. It was quite complicated under EC rules and in fact ours was the only compliant tender and, in fact, just the lowest bid. This really pissed off the Minister in West Africa who had wanted another party to win the bid for the usual African reasons. So what did the EC do? Their local office said they didn't want to upset the Minister and that tenders should be resubmitted. I complained but got nowhere. Guess who "won" the contract? I refused to resubmit on principle. So that's the reality of EC handling aid in Africa. We'd be better off without them dl

Indeed, the British Government would never do anything like that.

In which case we would probably be better off without this particular government as well then!
