Default Anyone know much about set top boxes?

Want to get a set top box for my mum for her birthday. Its for her weekend place and shes not there enough to warrant Sky. Just thought it might be nice for her to have a bit more choice.

Is there any difference buying a £100 box or a £50 apart from the price.

Thanks

I have 2 boxes
the £50 one is up stairs and is fine

The £100 one is downstairs and has the Top up TV card inserted

So the only difference in the price is if you want Top up TV I guess

Did see some in Currys over £200 I think bugger that price

(added) Make sure she is in a area the recieve the signal

Go to Top up TV web site

Whats the Top up TV card?

Was looking at one of the Alba boxes. Not the most famous make but the reviews seem good and she doesn't really need anything fancy. In fact the more buttons its got the less likely she is to use it.

I have a good one that i payed £120 for in the living room. Was walking through Tesco (hangs head in shame) and noticed they had one at, wait for it, £35. I thought why the hell not, so bought it for the bedroom. The one at £35 quid I like better and im going to move it to the living room. Seriously, you dont need to spend big money on them, they all do the same thing.
The top up boxes are boxes that u can pay to view channels, like Pay as You go phones.

The top-up TV card gets you subscription channels like E4, Discovery, etc. I got my Dad a £90 top-up capable Panasonic one for Christmas last year and he loves it, it's meant he's been able to catch all the additional Glasto coverage, as well as the ITV2 Champions league stuff. For some reason Mum isn't so keen on it though

Thumbs up

Have a look at http://www.radioandtelly.co.uk/freeviewreceivers.html for summaries of all set-top boxes.

Tesco are selling one for £35. It works pretty well - the only proble I've found is that it doesn't output from the scart and the RF socket at the same time - it's either one or the other.
