Mr McNulty said the estimate underlined the need for identity cards, which would help tackle illegal immigration and working.

It is an estimate!
Who is going to openly admit to being illegal so the govenement can count them?
I'd say the figures have been increased to help the ID card cause! By saying they are half a million illegals in the UK, and then in the next breath want you put your hand in your pocket to get an ID card as they are "suppose" to reduce the number of illegal immigrants!
More gutter press tactics from the govenment to back their corner!

As far as Im concered; illegal immigrants are less of a problem then economic migrants/bogus assylum seekers. As far as the third world is concerned we have an open-door policy.....

The funniest thing of all is that all these illegal immigrants claim benefits, in their chosen language, because the government saw fit to produce 'how to claim benefits' in 27 fukcing languages!! The NHS also produce 'how to' booklets in numerous languages too. I wonder how many other countries provide such a personal service LOL.
OK, perhaps I exaggerated on the 27 bit

now only a racist would say that thats the trouble now if you voice your opion, but the goverment is making people hate the fact the population is growing due to imigrants as they favour the imigrants over british people for any type of benfit or housing and when we say something !!!!! well its already been said

I'm willing to bet that there are more British people manipulating the system for govenment handouts (ie ones they are not entitled to) than there are illegals in the UK.
And it you were one of the "570,000" illegals in the UK, they wouldn't officially be able to claim any handout

The thing most people seem to overlook when they see the Express and Mail shock-horror headlines (which the government are using to their advantage to push through the ID card legislation) is that the vast majority of immigrants to this country only want what the indigenous population take for granted : to be able to work and provide for their families, and hopefully not get shot, blown up or tortured.

I'm assuming those that are here illegally aren't able to claim any benefits from our system then, so they must be working illegally or begging (or stealing perhaps). Just over half a million wasn't that many I thought, when compared to those that are "unable to work"/won't work and on benefits.

Many of the illegals are essential brought in to this country to work for pennies to send back to their families, it is little better than slavery. They can't escape to earn proper money or make a claim as they would be shipped back to where they came from. Just becuase they are not a drain on the welfare state does not mean that what is going is right. People trafficing needs to be stopped from a humane perspective if nothing else.
