Default CON - Companies selling franking machine labels!

Anyone come across these con-merchants?

We have a franking machine for our company post and on a number of occasions we have been contacted by companies supposedly "Confirming" a previous order making a "friendly" coutesy call regarding franking machine labels.

Without knowing exactly what is happening, 1000s of labels turn up with a bill for £500+. I would have fallen for this if it wasn't for a colleague who had encountered these people before.

However, one such company spoke to our MD not so long ago and asked if we wanted any labels, he said yes and was told that we would receive 1 box of 5 mini packs to the amount of £130 approx. Our MD said we would not use that much and the girl said "well, will you just need one?". Yes was the reply but our MD thought he had agreed to one mini pack of about £25 - The girl says back to him "Ok, so thats one box". Our MD agreed signed the fax confirmation assuming it was for 1 of these mini-packs

We have had a row with these people on the phone and they have played the conversation back to us and you can clearly hear our MD ask for a mini-pack but the girl confirms bach to him by saying "OK, so thats one box"

Blatantly, this is a con job. The girl from this label company delibrately said one box which our MD assumed to be one mini-pack.

They won't accept the labels back (surprise) and they record all calls (Another surprise). We have basically told them to push off and speak to our solicitors.

Anyone else had problems with these companies. Agreed our MD should have checked the fax properly and repeated his request for 1 mini box but its obvious these companies work in such a way as to trick unsuspecting companies into buying large quantities of these labels and vast expense.

LOL, we had a temp in our office who checked our franking label levels (which were short). So she asked whether we should re-order some, my boss agreed. Little did we know that the reason she checked was because of a label company asking why we hadnt re-ordered any in a while. She confirmed to them verbally that we would take another box of what we had ordered before.

The said company sent one box of labels and then we were promptly sent an invoice for £500 We then returned the labels recorded delivery, saying that we had not placed an official order and that they were the wrong labels anyway.

They threatened legal action and they still send the invoice every month LOL but we have the signature from them confirming that we had returned them

B@stards the lot of them, not sure i should name and shame them though

Exact same thing happened at my place. As soon as it arrived we packed it back up and sent back to them. They threatened to take us to court and we were gonna go to court but they didn't take it any further the ar$es.

Something should be done about such companies as in many cases companies will just pay the money to avoid the hassle.

Here is the company we had the above scam pulled on us;

Labelforce a trading name of Butterfly Publishing Ltd.

The equifax report states the co. secretary as female and 21 years old lol!

Anyway, does that trading name ring a bell for any of the above posts

Get the SmartStamp software from Royal Mail.

Wide change of bog standard Avery labels available from any office stationary company. The cost is cheaper than paying for franking machine as well.

This happens to our company all the time, we have 16 locations, and order all our stationary centrally.
These companies phone up and speak to the administrator at the local site, agree when she asks if Head Office have told them to call, agrees to the order and then wonders why 000's of labels then appear.
We are currently in the process of taking them to court.

Second vote for smartstamp.

AFAIK, any company recording telephone conversations MUST inform you prior to commencing said conversation. IMHO that tape is worthless.

Ask them for a copy of the tape, so you can pass YOUR evidence of their company to the Department of Trade and Industry.

Anything purchased by means of "Distance Selling" (ie NOT face to face) you have the right to return the goods within 7 WORKING days. Its the LAW. If you are within 7 working days, send it back RM - Special Delivery, with added note "**** off, you thieving scum"...

HTH

There must be a hell of a mrgin in these things as so many companies try to flog em too you in any way possible - "we'll send you a free gift to your house etc etc"
