Soundproofing a car?
Well it should be in ICE coz it's soundproofing and it should be in Other Marques coz it's not for a scoob. So I'll take the average and put it here, if I may - just for 24hrs, please mods?
Basically I have a Rav4 5-door, MY03, and four sheets of dynamat Xtreme. And I'm wondering where to put them to most effectively reduce road noise. I've already done the four doors, it seems to have made a difference already.
Options for the remaining 4 sheets are a combination of -
The back door (1 sheet)
The two rear wheel arches (2 sheets)
The cargo floor, including under the back seats (4 sheets)
The front footwells (2 sheets)
Off on a driving holiday this weekend, so would like to get it done before then!
I've asked this on a Rav4 forum, but let's just say that it isn't as quick as SN.
Any (constructive) suggestions, apart from the obvious one of wrapping one round the head of each occupant?

Thought I'd better get it in first before anyone else did, glad you've been reading my 'material' it's top notch stuff
In any case it's hardly an insult, I was just hoping it belonged to " 'er in doors ". I wouldn't like to think of you being emasculated surrounded by those matcho portu-geezers.

It's OK but tends to get repetitive. You need a break to get back in touch with your more creative side, amuse us regulars a bit more often
She's the one that drives it mostly. I had dreams of a Caterham or MCoupe but spent too much on the house. Anyway, I commute by train. Saves money on increasingly expensive fuel

Id say do the wheels arches and boot floor/spare wheel well if it has one. If there is enough left, do the front wheel arches where they project into the footwells.
Next time though, go to a DIY store and buy flashing tape and use that instead. very similar to dynamat etc, but costs pennies.

David, thanks for the reply. I did the back door and one rear arch yesterday, will do the other tonight and that will finish my stock.
Your comment about flashing tape is interesting, especially when I see on a website you can get it in rolls up to 600mm wide. One question - do you know if the adhesive is "reusable"? I notice that with Dynamat it seems I can rip it off (hopefully also after six months) then stick it back on again, so if I need to access a loom or, say, the window winders in the doors, then I can. Do you reckon it would be the same with flashing tape?

It's a roofing product, used for waterproofing joins. As dave says, very similar to dynamat - aluminium foil, which you can stretch or crush in 3D to a degree, backed with 2-3mm of bitumen adhesive.

Very happy to use it if I know I can peel it off later.

Dynamat is good but it won't do the whole job.... or at least not the best job.
Have a search for NOISEKILLER. They describe the different types of products available and may have a kit for the RAV.

Im not sure about removing and re-using Im afraid. I have done a few cars in the past with flashing tape and have never had cause to go back and remove any so dont know how it reacts.

Doing the roof is very worthwhile, ever driven with snow on the roof and noticed how quiet it is? I did the Fiesta and it made a real difference plus it didn't flex as much when polishing the other side!
