Talking Spending in Europe, cash, credit card, switch? whats best?

Im off to Europe in a few weeks, but havent decided on the best method for making payments over there yet.

I think switch charge a percentage + one off charge if you withdraw from a cashpoint. My credit card charges 2.75% which seems reasonable - what sort of percentage can you get from the post office or wherever?

cheers!

AFAIK Post Office is nil %

I would get local currency and traveler's cheques

Use CC for some transations if needed

I always take some cash with me and then get what I need out of cashpoints on my Switch card, actually Maestro now, and pay for what I can on credit card, pretty much what I do over here really just in Groats.

If you plan to come to Germany you will need cash, only major supermarkets and major petrol stations take Credit Cards.

Alot of the smaller petrol stations on teh autobahn do not take credit cards only Shell, ARAL and maybe Esso afaik.

REAL supermarket takes visa and amex.

Some hotels here do not even take CC as we found out after spending the night in one recently.

Agreed, alot of smaller hotels prefer cash and petrol stations can be tricky too.

Get a nationwide credit card - no fees at all. You can also open a Nationwide current account and either switch ot withdraw from ATM's with no fees
