Default Holiday spending money

Planning on doing a fair bit of shopping in San Fran next week. What's the best (cheapest) way of converting GBP to USD?

i'm off to florida in a few weeks, am watching the dollar ATM to make sure i buy at the right time
i always take dollars to the USA, given up with Travellers Cheques, too much hassle trying to cash them in, then finding tthe amount you get back is a lot less than you paid

just check the best rates of exchange on the net

only if you are near a bank. its a bit inconvenient being in the middle of no where on a sunday and needing cash. if your worried about getting robbed or losing stuff then TCs are good, but are not as convenient

No, in the US you can spend travellers checks in stores. Just hand 'em over, sign 'em and they give you the change in cash. No fee either -- buy something for $10 with a $100 travellers check, and they'll give you $90 in change. Sometimes you might have to show ID.

It's not the same as in Europe where you have to get them changed up somewhere.

that means carrying passports and the like around as id..and depending on the worth of the cheque, some smaller stores will not be able to give you the amount out of the till

Never had a problem myself. I always show them my UK driving licence, which I carry all the time anyway.

Still, you only need cash for the toll roads -- everything else can go on plastic.

I usually take about $100 in smaller bills for tips & taxis and put the rest on plastic.

Nationwide Credit card has no extra charges for using abroad and exchange rate is much better than you get from travelex. I checked yesterday and the rate was 1.785 wheras as travelex was 1.7612

Just keep a small amount of cash & put everything else on the card.
