Tescos returns policy - be warned - now with a happy ending (for moi)!
The story so far
I purchased a tin of baby food (the milk sort you mix with water and feed via a bottle).
Being a bloke i got the wrong one - right make just the wrong type.
I took it back to Tesco Mereway along with the reciept to swap it for the correct one.
No, not allowed to. Their policy not to exchange baby food or medicines.
There are no signs up at customer services or the baby products section relating to this.
I was told because it could have been tampered with.
Well the tin has an external seal - not broken and an internal foil seal.
I explained this to Paul ******* the manager who still point blank refused. He said we could have tampered with it. I explained we had not. I also stated that we had bought it in good faith. How did we know it had not been tampered with prior to our purchase of it from the store as the only guides are the seals.
Anyway
they refused. I gave the manager back a months worth of reciepts totalling around £ 400.00 and said we would not be back to Tescos.
Also now shopping around for car and home insurance (both with Tescos but not for much longer).
Disgusted with the way i was threated and will not be back ever.

Same with Sainsburys - only when we purchased the worng nappies, they took them back as a gesture of goodwill and basically said we'll dump them but we appreciate you made a mistake. Which was nice.... surprised Tesco did not just do that as its hardly a massive amount of money!

People are able to get shoe bombs onto aeroplanes nowadays; it's obvious people can tamper with seals on baby food. He done the right thing IMO. If I go to buy baby food I don't want returned cartons for my baby!

That's all well and good, bt he has a fair point about how does he know they haven't been tampered with before Tesco got them?
There have been several stories over the years of people sabotaging food for supermarkets, so if Tesco are willing to stand by sealed goods, then they should accept those same seals as guarantees when you return them.
I would speak to your local trading standards about it.
Geezer

Don't let one Jobsworth without an ounce of common sense to his name influence you like that, Paul. He has rules to follow, he's just doing what he's been told, regardless of how ridiculous it seems. Plenty of examples like this around - don't let it get to you, move on.

For the benefit of the record though I completely agree with your post and have done the same thing myself at Tescos.

The 'it could have been tampered with' seems irrelvant to me - its the fact of a lack of notation on returns for Baby products at the point of sale, at the customer services or at the products section
I would certainly be looking for a refund based on this - where exactly does it state you cant get a refund? - and is there anything on the receipt about returns
Cant say I've ever looked but then I wont shop at Tesco's anyway - Sainsbury's is far better
Though in the end probably not worth getting too upset over say £10 of product - just leave down to experience and yes I'd probably boycott their products as well.... hmm.. I'm contradicting myself by saying forget about it - the arseholes......

No wonder you were treated so badly... this guy has ruined Tweaky's life and cost you a jar of baby food all in one week!

Paul, if you've made the decision not to shop in Tesco then stick to it. I've had a ten year vendetta going with Pizza Express (as it was) when they pissed me off once even to the extent that I pissed off a group of us one night (who had since forgiven Pizza Express for their slight) by refusing to eat there.
Vendettas are good for you but they require commitment.

I agree with the store policy - I wouldn't want to feed my kids food with any slight possibility of tampering. For the sake of six quid or whatever it is, forget it.

You should boycott Pizzaexpress on account of the fact that there pizza's are crap anyway - way too much salt and they have not changed in the last 10 years.......

Did you throw your toys oot the trolley?
Gotta laugh. "I will not shop here again I'll have you know.....". It's the little things that upset some people isn't it. Goodness knows how you'll cope in a crisis

Mistakes are made. You encounter a difficult employee. You don't like the policy.
All fair enough & very noble, but to change YOUR lifestyle, stress levels, and hold a vendetta for life......over something as non-descript & banal as, what, a supermarket????????
Good grief.

I newver even raised my voice (good job as i have a sore throat and it would have gone all high and thin). Justs stated how i felt in a measured manner.
How would i cope in a crisis - been there and handled it well thank you.
Eclaire.
re baby food and tampering with it. I knda agree
BUT
Following that through. How do you know ir was not tampered with at the point of production. Or, on distribution from suppler to the stores wharehouse.
Or in the stores wharehouse
or on delivery to the store
Or on the shelves.
The only proof is the seal(s)
Otherwise may i suggest you never buy any food for you baby again and make it yourself from products you produce yourself in a secure location.
Just to be sure!
Really, if i wanted to harm kids (and i do not) there are better easlier ways (sadly).
It is not about the money (yes, i know everybody says that) - really it is not. It is the principal and the fact that the stores policy is not on show in/near the products affected.

I regularly get in touch with my non-English side when confronted by **** service or shoddy goods and if more people did, then there would be a greater emphasis on customer satisfaction.
As the old adage goes, if you receive poor service from one company you tell ten other people but if you receive good service you only tell one.
I've had fantastic service from Carphone Warehouse and if I was in the market for a mobile then I wouldn't even visit their opposition so it can work both ways.
