Default Keeping Fit?

I have reached the point where I can't put it off any longer and MUST consider ways to get fit.

The trouble is though that I have certain disabilities that prevent me from doing the usual stuff. Basically had a horrendous motorcycle accident that broke the entire left side of my body (Lesson 1. Bridges don't move no matter how fast you hit them) and I can't put any weight on or straighten my left arm. My left knee is full of pins and my fingers of my right hand cannot bend (prevents me from gripping). My hips were attacked for bone grafts and they give me hell too

Given the above, running hurts my knees and hips.
Swimming is difficult as I cant use my left arm, I can float and bob around but lengths are painful.
Cycling is a no no as I cant grip the handlebars very well and as I can't straighten my left arm every dip or pothole causes my arm to collapse and I nearly fall off.
Gym is a waste of time as I cant use most of the apparatus, cant grip the rowing machine, cant lift the weights, cant rest on my arms on the cycling machine etc.

Walking is not bad but sometimes my knee gives way.

I am reluctant to do anything that is likely to lead to me falling over as if I break my arm again it is likely that it will need to come off.

Can anyone give me any suggestions as I simply cannot resort to eating vegetables!

Get a job as a buoy? All that bobbing should help and it's a helpful service to boot.

You'll find I don't frequent muppets to be drawn out.

Lets face it, you only just about qualify for deep breathing exercises!!

Or spin classes? (no need to grip the handlebars, nor to put any weight on your legs? (unless I've got the wrong end of the stick about 'Spin'))

Have you tried powerlifters wrist straps ? These go around the wrists then tie over the apparatus - e.g. rowing machine, lateral pull downs, even dumbells.

Sit up machines should be fine (although lacking in cardiovascular intensity), as will step machines.

3 years worth of physio just to learn how to walk, bend my arms and remember how to bend my figers (after the tendons were re-attached) It all concentrated on the muscle groups to replace the muscle wastage, not cardio-vascular.

I ideally need to lose weight and regain some cardio fitness. Strapping my arm to a bar isn't really going to help much I don't think, it'll just make it hurt lika a son of a gun!

Aqua aerobics would probably be the best suggestion so far I suppose but thanks for helping (non muppets).

Tried it, because I cant bend my fingers it is very difficult to hold on to the bar (not impossible) but the biggest problem is extending my left arm, it will not go straight and that makes the rowing machine more difficult.

I'm not making excuses but I have already tried that.

In my gym there is an exercise bike that has a normal seat and you sit back and pedal and I rarely use my hands at all

I know you have said that you don't want to resort to eating veggies, however i have been following Carol Vorderman's detox for life for exactly a month today and have lost 1 stone and 5lbs in only 1 month with no exercise. Yes it is hard, no dairy, tea or booze but i feel great. Give it a go as exercise seems to be too difficult at this stage.

You won't get better than this for the less abled.

The only product of its kind, the UPPERTONE was designed and introduced in 1990 by a C4-C5 quadriplegic. It allows people with C4-C5 and below quadriplegia (tetraplegia) due to spinal cord injury to do all the necessary upper body exercises necessary for rehabilitation and maintenance, without any assistance. Indeed they can make all the adjustments, including resistance, without hand grip strength, cuffs, or assistance.
The UPPERTONE is now in use in spinal cord injury treatment centres, rehabilitation facilities, universities and colleges, and homes in more than twenty countries.

No matter if spasticity, leg amputation or half side paralysis – the THERA-vital knows what you do.
It activates the training of patients who have only little or one-sided muscular strength with a motor muscle support.

There's others available too. It's just whether or not you want to spend the money. If you do then give me a shout and I can sort it.

Looks expensive?

I joined a gym but found that I couldn't use effectively the majority of the equipment. Dont want to buy something I'll never get around to using. Let me tell you about the bread making machine I was convinced was going to change my life........

Certainly set you back a few thousand but will be the best apparatus for the job that you asked the question for.

If you can't see yourself using it then you can't be *that* serious about fitness surely.

Something will only change your life if you work with it, so tell me about your bread making machine.
