Default Help in choosing a guitar for a beginner

As it seems we have a few people who play on here, can I pick your brains please.

I need some help in choosing a guitar (6 string). Now I haven't played for 17 years, and the last time I used an acoustic 1, now I fancy an electric.

Any info is much appriciated. Cheers

I would suggest a Squier - depends on your budget but for aroudn £100-£150 you could pickup a strat copy, combo amp, lead, strings & case etc. Cheap but if it does not work out not much lost.

On the other hand...

A Les Paul Custom would be nice...

Go into a decent guitar shop, check your budget, pick a load up, play them and take the one that feels best

There are loads of good electrics around nowadays, for very little money. You'll be spoiled for choice, so what Hanslow said. Budget for a reasonable amp as well, or else whatever you buy will sound crap.

Perhaps you should ask yourself what you want to achieve ?

If you really want to get your chops together, a "Spanish" or "classic" guitar (nylon strings) is a good choice. It is relatively easy on your fingers at first, but you do have to practice to make it "sound".

It's a bit of a "purist" way to learn (or relearn) to play the axe, but it does pay off later on.

After that, any old electric, EMG81 pickups, and a Mesa Boogie MkIV will do the trick

Strangely enough, the acoustic had metal strings on it, and I first learnt on that. I don't mind getting blisters *phsyco me*

Cheers guys, I have a few things to think about, like how much I want to spend.

Found 1 I love

Those old enough to rememeber Ultravox should recognise the axe. Its the same as Midge Ure's, (its his daughter) He had a sister to his made his for her. Its made by Gordon Smith www.fairplay.demon.co.uk Ok I will never get 1 like that (stoped making them about 7 years ago), but the rest of his range look cool.
