Default Anyone Know About "MINI MOTO'S"

My 5 year old son would love one of these for his 6th birthday, what is the recommended minimum age for these?

Any other info like where to get from/how much etc would be great.

Cheers

well considering they do a good 40mph I dont think Id let my 5yr old on 1... although each to their own, Id say minimum age should be at least 12/13. theyre not road legal either, mate has 1 and has to go to deserted air strips to play on it, seems a waste to me. to a 5yr old a mini moto would be more like a 1000cc superbike IMO

Not sure on a minimum age, but i'd say at least 10 Really.

I've seen some pretty nasty injuries when my mates have fell off. 30mph is Damn Quick when you're on something that size!

How about a little battery operated car/jeep thing instead?

My daughter was riding a PW50 flat out at 4 years of age but was properly supervised, wore all the right gear and had the room.

I'd sooner recommend a peewee type bike than a mimimoto at an early age.

rather than the jap superbike style mini moto's id go for a mini harley, or mini chopper. They're a lot easier to ride/balance on, etc and for a kid prob a better idea

Have you seen the recent posters regarding Minimotos and the law?

Extract taken from Cumbrian police site :

A male Robert Woodburn was found guilty at Kendal Mags court for riding a mini moto while disqualified and having no insurance and will be sentenced on 9 August. Mini moto are the small sized motorbikes powered with internal combustion engine.

Police would like to remind the public that these motorbikes can not be used on a road or any where the public can go (ie supermarket car parks) unless they comply with the law in every aspect ie registered taxed insurance and rider must be appropriate age have the relevant driving license and wear a helmet. Since the vehicle has not received type approval this is not possible. They can only be used on private land with permission.

Oh

I had no idea they did those kinds of speeds!!!

I have no idea what the hell they are all about, can you get something of similar size that would be suitable for his age.

And yes, i will be getting all equipment to suit it, ie protective clothing and helmet. and it will bne ridden uder supervision at all times and not on the road!

why not get him a tiny quad bike or summat that he has less chance of falling off, and will probably enjoy more as he wil lbe able to ride it out the box rather than learn how to balance on a bike.

I definately think a mini moto might be a bit quick for a child that young. I fell off mine when I hit a pot hole doing the full 40mph-ish and it hurt

Would the quad bike have the same kind of speeds though

I must admit the attraction of a mini moto for me was going to have been the way you can fit them in your boot.

It must have an engine in it though.

For sure, like i said earlier i didnt know they went that fast, so that particular idea has been scrapped.

Just trying to work out alternatives now

Cookstar, get a PW50 or equivalent and restrict it until your son is accomplished enough to let go. It's a simple operation via a screw on the throttle body.

If you are serious about teaching to ride then a quad or a chopper style bike isn't the way to go. You see enough riders on the road with little clue on how to sit on a bike properly as it is.

If it's going to be just a passing fad then anything that is fun to a child will do.

Not really. Like a responsible parent, you did ask what is the minimum age. D

Nasty little things if you ask me. Looks like a toy but is far from it. My local scooby garage had one for the mechanics to play around on until one of them came off and lost rather a lot of skin...

Anything 'played around on' is dangerous, then there's the showing off to the mates, the total lack of experience on a bike, I could go on.

Get a mini motocross bike, and restrict the speed - if they are riding on mud or grass they will be in much less danger of hurting themselves, esp with some decent safety gear.

You should consider that they shouldnt be allowed to control anything faster than how fast they could pedal a push bike - I'm sure we all fell off our pushbikes as kids, and didnt end up with serious damage.

The amount of parents I have seen letting tiny kids ride around the roads unsupervised on full power minimotos is unbelievable - I nearly had to scrape one off the front of the car a few months back.

We bought our 9 year old one for xmas last year, thinking he would be able to handle it. After around 7 goes on a dirt track he fell off it awkwardly and broke his leg in 3 places. After a roasting from the hospital, about how a 9 year old isnt supposed to be riding them, we decided to put it away until he was older. We also had it restricted to around 30 mph before the accident. At 6 years old, i wouldnt even think of buying him one! dont do it!

My worst MX injuries have been low-speed (sub-30mph) crashes. The higher-speed crashes have caused more injuries to the bike than to me.

I'd spend the money on MX lessons for my kid rather than buying him something he simply can't use anywhere. He'll learn more machine control in 3 yours of MX track time than in 3 years of wobbling on a minimoto.

[QUOTE=StickyMicky]30mph is still fecking well fast for a young boy[/QUOTE

i totally agree with you. But hes been go-karting since he was 7, so the little bugger has no fear and had been pestering for ages for one. reluctantly and stupidly, i gave in (with a bit of persuasion from his dad) and i learned the hard way. Thats what i am saying, dont learn the hard way like me and my lad did.

As stated earlier, my daughter at 4 years of age found 30 mph no problem in the field and quickly moved on to ramp jumps!

I was racing at 9 years of age with 35 others on a grid.

I had a 50cc Puch scrambler at 6 years old, which had a restrictor in the carb keeping it to about 15-20mph.

When I got a bit older my dad took out the restrictor....could just about squeeze 30mph out of it then with a good straight and a tailwind

However the thought of a kid on a 40+mph minimoto sounds a bit ott

A lot of karting tracks now do mini moto evenings, it might be worth going taking him to watch / have a go.
