Default Calling USA - ratebuster.co.uk

I notice that http://www.ratebuster.co.uk are advertising 1p a minute calls to the usa?

It seems to work by me dialling 0844 7202020 and then entering the international number.

It all seems too good to be true, how do they make money.. and what's the catch?

Anyobody any experience with things like this?

Thanks

Andy

You pay for the call to the "access number" which is 0844 in this case at a cost of 1p per min (plus minimum call charge set by your telco, usually 5p). RateBuster will take a cut of this call revenue (Freeserve was set-up on this business model). You then pay for the "inter-country" part of the call at whatever rates they set and of course they make money on this too. Your calls are probably routed over the Internet.

If you want to call the US for 1.3p per min, download Skype for your PC. I've used it to call Canada and it's pretty flawless and very easy to get running.

From what i understood, it's cheaper than skype. maybe i'm way off course.

But if i dial the 0844 number from a bt line, i have confirmed with bt.com that this will cost me 1p a minute, how can i then be charged more? HOw do they charge me for the inter-country bit?

Surely the total cost is 1p per minute (bt charge you 5p minimum per call though)

It is, I misunderstood how their service operates My bad. No additional cost on top of your BT call cost.

From what i've read costs from mobiles to 0844 numbers vary greatly from a few pence up to 35p a minute. it depends what operator your mobile is with, and what tarrif also.

Looks like this is just the ticket for me phoning my g/f in the states.

It just looks a bit too good to be true.

Well it will definitely be cheaper, it doesn't matter whether you are calling a landline or mobile in the states.

Ive used a firm like this for years to call Japan. My phone bill shows either an 0844 or an 0871 type number only (PSTN or cellular); thats all I pay.

Hello

Have a look here: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/callchecker/index.php . That shows a whole range of companies offering cheap calls.

I use the companies listed there extensively to call randomly around the world.
