Default complete idiot wants to know Whats the best way to get the internet at home

We don't even have a phone line (got the socket in the wall but never got BT or whoever to connect it) as we use our mobiles.

What's the cheapest way to go about this? It needs to be a fast connection as my wife wants to use it for work during the day and I'll be surfing at night.

Any help appreciated

So youll have to get BT to re-connect you then pic a bb provider that suits your needs best. Most bb packages are pretty reasonable now.

Bizarrely, even if you go for an unbundled service (like Bulldog) where they take over the whole line and adminstration of it, etc. you'll have to get BT to reconnect it first. That's because the database is indexed by phone number, so if you haven't got one you can't get broadband.

However, there is hope. If your area has been cabled by either NTL or Telewest I think they both do broadband-only packages now, so you don't have to get a line from them.

Borrow a wireless enabled laptop (if you don't have your own) and try it in different rooms of your house - you never know....worked for me round my girlfriends flat, though I wasn't too impressed by her neighbour's rather shabby music collection Must...resist...temptation....to.....delete....it

Be careful about hogging someone else's connexion wirelessly. Somebody got fined recently for doing exactly that:

That's not quite what I had in mind, but that has saved me a few times when I needed to send an email. A few minutes driving around residential streets shows several wireless internet connections that have been left open.

What I did have in mind, was people like http://uk.lttbroadband.com/.
