My ex has taken my dog (well our dog) He is registered to him but at my house. (he doesn't live with me)

Ccan I report my dog as stolen and tell the police where he is? Do I stand a chance of getting him back.

How can you report YOUR dog as stolen when

a. you admit its registered to him

b. you said earlier "our" dog

the dogs gone Im afraid, best bet of getting him back is to go through the courts as if it was a child

We purchased him together, as in paid half each for him, but could only register him under one of our names, so he did it!

I feed him everyday, pay for his vets bills and boosters, walk him and generally care for him - the ex does nothing apart from play with him.

Has he taken him or is it still at your house?
If he's taken him then I'm not sure what you can do cause he's looking after it now.

playing with the dog plays a big part in its upbringing too you know.... my dog would be miserable if I didnt play with him with his toys...

Dont tell me that you pay for its upkeeping and look after it better, I dont care lol seriously though he has more rights over the dog than you do.... Only way of getting it back is going through some sort of court proceedings Id guess but you'd pay through your teeth for a solicitor. The police will be less than receptive if they go looking for this stolen dog with you knowing full well its registered to the guy who has it

Ask the local cop shop or CAB how you stand.

just let him have the dog...it might be hard but is it worth the hassle...especially as he half owns it...?

an ex of mine is in dispute with an ex of hers (long story) about everything from the cats to contract on the house even though he actually paid nothing towards any of it and its all turned a bit nasty...best to just leave it IMO...

hope it all works out nontheless...shame when these things happen...!

Neanderthal - he has taken him from my house to his mums house where he lives. He already has 2 of his own dogs, who don't like my dog really as he is still young.

Davegtt - I do play with him lots, and give him loads of cuddles which he likes. He is scared of my ex sometimes.

Suppose I should just give up and leave him to it.

Think yourself lucky, my wife is a Solicitor and one of her clients had the dogs put down just to spite her partner.

its not about giving up...just dont do it as a matter of principle for 2 reasons...

1. plod wont be too happy about getting involved in the early stages of a domestic dispute and are less likely to take you seriously if things escalate (talking from much experience here)

2. it could set you on the road to becoming very bitter and pigheaded when and if it comes to similar issues, and thats never the best way...hard as it is, the best thing to do usually is be the bigger and better (wo)man...

Speak to your ex to see if you can presuade him to let you have the dog back.

If you were to get the dog back without his implicit permission the Police wouldnt bother with it (IMO) and he would have to take you to cival court. Posession is 9/10ths.

Seeing as there is no dog license in this country now, how is the dog registered, kennel club, local vets, pet insurance etc?

As far as the up keep of the dog is concerned it dont mean diddly squat to be honest, as far as the eyes of the law are concerned the animal is a possesion, yes there are animal rights etc, but a possesion all the same.

If you can prove that you purchased the dog then you own it, but getting someone to champion your cause for less than a fortune is not going to be easy. I would suggest opening dialogue with your ex and trying to get the dog back that way, or there is always bunging the local nutter down the pub a few quid to 'do you a favour'.

Freak, in your opinion is the left or right side of a dog most favourable in these situations?

There's your answer then...

B*gger, I was neutral 'til I read that. Pursue every avenue for the dog's return!
