Yep, stayed there in January this year when the average day time temp. was about -5 the whole time.

You HAVE to do the Blue Lagoon, either arrange to do it coming from or returning to the airport as it's only about 20 minutes from there. We did it on the way back. The outside temp. on that day was -11, but the water stays at a constant 80+ C and comes out of the well over 100 C . The snow was coming down like no-ones business. You can also do your own facial . They have a steam room and sauna there and staff who'll give you an all over massage.

You can go and see the Geysers as well, thats quite an experience too, but it's a one trick pony and you'll be bored after about 20 minutes. We tried to see the Northern Lights but someone forgot to switch them on

We stayed in Reykjavic in a really expensive hotel (name escapes me) near to the Sports stadium. It was a bit further out of the centre and is normally used by Business men using the company credit card. If I returned I would stay closer to the City centre. The whole place is expensive. However, I would compare it to going to nicer places in the West End (London). Alcohol is VERY expensive which ican only be bought 'off licence' in State owned shops. Prohibition was only lifted in the late 80's. They even have a Bank Holiday every March to celebrate the lifting when it's almost the law to get pished!!

If you are in the Capital for the weekend they really know how to party. Things don't really start getting going until midnight and normally carry on until 6AM . Everyone we met spoke English. Apparently there are only 280k Icelanders. They are the only ones who speak Icelandic in the whole of the World, therefore they all learn English as a second language.

We thoroughly enjoyed the place and would have no qualms recommending a short break there (4 to 5 days max)

HTH.

BTW, they're currently doing a 2 for 1 offer on fish fingers

Wink

My other half and I went a little while back. Absolutely AWESOME.
I'd recommend the Blue Lagoon for one. Hot water and mineral paste that you spread over your skin. Also a must see is Strokkur - Hot steam Geysers.

Couple of things though

1: When you arrive at your hotel and have a wash / shower the smell of the water is going to make you barf. Smells like rotten eggs.
2. Beer / wine / food is hellishly expensive. I bought 3 pints of beer and an orange juice and the bill was £30 and that was in a local pub. Take stuff with you.

Would deffo recommend going whale watching - Fantastic and the puffins were highly amusing, They eat so many fish that they cannot take off when startled by the boat. They skim along the top of the water.

From Reykjavik the usual tourist route is to do a "Golden Circle" tour, which includes Geyser, Gullfoss and Thingvaltir.

Geyser is the original place where geysers were named after. Gullfoss is one of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe and Thingvaltir is the location of the first Icelandic parliament, the first democratically elected parliament ever. You can also see the fissures between the earths tectonic plates.

4 days is not long, but if you like awesome natural beauty then you might consider a night or two away from Reykjavik. It's too far to drive with so little time, but you can get internal flights. One of the most amazing things I remember is the vast Vatnajokull glacier, and the glacial lagoon which exists on it's Eastern side (you can take a motor boat trip around this lagoon full of icebergs).

Or you can take walks through old lava fields, like at Krafla. There's a number of places where you can see things like bubbling mud, sulphur vents etc

Then of course it's possible to do things like trips on glacier by snow taxi or snow mobiles. It must be said such trips aren't cheap, but then you'll have the memories forever and you'll forget the pain of how much it cost

Enjoy, hope you get nice weather.

Not is my experience although I did see one girl in a restaurant who was a spitting image, could almost have been her sister.

Oh - Take crisps, biscuits, bread rolls, snacks etc with you.

I kid you NOT it is stinkingly expensive.

The hotel we stayed at would charge £7 per ham roll if they made up a food pack for any day trips etc.
At breakfast I would make my own from the buffet, eat one - pack one, and repeat till bag was full.

Google?

I don't say it's cheap, but if you have limited time then it allows you to make the most of it.

The reason everything's so expensive over there is because it's all imported. pretty much the only domestic produce is wool from sheep and fish products!

If you buy snacks etc from the supermarkets (they're usually from the "10-11" chain), you'll notice that most are imported from England anyway! I had a dodgy pack of crisps while trekking on Vatnajokull (glacier) and realised that (if I had wanted) to complain, I'd have to write to the head office which is about 10 minutes from where I live here... Bizarre!

See Post #17 for the write-up from my first visit:
http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/showthrea...hlight=iceland

Cheers!

Whilst on one of the tours we passed some huge greenhouses. The guide took great delight in telling us that Iceland is self sufficent in tomatos!!

She also said that they've also been known to grow their own bananas too!
