Ryanair's taxes are dearer than all of the other airline's; it's got them into a lot of trouble with the ASA. It worked out cheaper to fly to Venice with Easyjet than using Ryanair recently, and Ryanair were only 'charging' £1 each way plus taxes.....

It's still only something like 30 quid return, no big deal.

Book a tour of the Volvo factory?

Probably advisable to start saving for the beers now as they are ridiculously expensive in Sverge-Land.

I hope you enjoy the experience anyway.

I'll ask around.. working in stockholm at the moment, and half the team are from gothenburg.

Yup, it's expensive - about 100SEK (8 quid-ish) for a G&T.. I'm billing more for expenses than my work

Sweden is a great place, stunning women, beautiful scenery and very friendly people.

But, I found Gothenburg a bit of a **** hole in comparison to other places I went to whilst there. It's a port town, so a bit like Southampton or Portsmouth with lots of immigrants and a bit of medium level crime.

My advice would be to visit the towns on the outskirts and enjoy the hospitality and beer.

I lived and worked (in Volvo) in Gothenburg and loved it. Loads of tasty women, who seem to like the British!!

Makesure you go to kungsport Avenue(can't remeber exactly how to spell it as we called it something very similiar due to the totty about ), its the main street where all the bars and resturants are. If you like a flutter on the roulette weheels or black jack, most bars have tables in them at the weekend. I can't really reccomend any bars as it was a few years ago when i was out there, and when i returned for a brief visit my favourite bar had closed down. But makesure you try and venture down some of the side streets, as that is where you find some of the nicer bars.

Makesure you go out into the countyside surrounding the city if you have chance, and have a good look out the plane windows when you are landing, the scenery is pretty interesting.

There is a Theme Park on the outskirts, but it maybe shut now. If you are into sport ice hockey is very big out there and there is a big stadium. Also there is a decent foooty stadium by the train station.

Well I've come back now......

10/10 for everyone who said it was a sihthole. No stuning architecture, just grey concrete buildings. I guess it must be something to do with the winters or something. They CAN'T have deliberately chosen grey concrete surely?

It seemed like it was half day closing and all the museums were shut. To cap it all the boat trips around the harbour finished the day before!

Not as many blonde women as I expected but they all looked lovely. Strange how they talk in Swedish but swear in English.

The woman in the tourist information centre nearly pi$$ed herself when I asked her what there was to do....

What amazed me was the fact that we were there throughout the day and considering it is the 2nd largest city in Sweden there was hardly any traffic at all. Lots of trams and they seemed packed but barely any cars. Saw an M3 and wondered how that would manage in the snow and a fair amount of Volvos and Saab's. The Saabs were all brand new and the Volvo's were all really old.

If you decide to go then just catch the airport bus into town. It's half the price of a taxi and just as convenient. Only about £3-00 each way for a 40 minute ride.

The motorways are mental, they build them and they just don't seem to join up at the ends, you often have to stop at a "junction" turn left 90 degrees for about 100 foot then turn right 90 degrees and continue. It must be something to do with the winters!

Oh yeah, like France EVERYONE smokes. All the time. But unlike here the roads are still clean, people don't chuck their *** ends on the floor and expect them to biodegrade.

Glad I went, ticked another country off the map but didn't reallt get an idea of what Sweden is really like. Perhaps I'll do the rally next year and travel a bit more extensively.

Oh yeah, didn't have any alcohol but overall it didn't seem any more expensive than here.

(Are aircraft supposed to take off diagonally across the runway with the wingtips rising and dipping? Is screaming a regular occurence?)

I asked if they liked Ferrari......

No, really I was just sitting in a cafe taking in the surroundings and listening to a group of classic blonde swedish girls talking amongst themselves.

How can you call it a ****hole compared to this country..
WHen I went everywhere was clean, the pavements were full of the most amazing looking women and we went to some decent places.
It does help going on a footy tour and having one of the team that comes from Goteborg so he knew where and when to go..Top place would love to go back but it looks like Latvia for the tour this season...

Compared to, say, London there was nothing to do. No Architectural beauty, no tourist attractions and no ...history. It was literally just like the town was built from scratch in the 70's out of grey concrete. Compare that with London, you can barely move without bumping into a museum, stunning architecture (even in the city), tourist attraction (even in the city) or something else. The city has a traffic problem, true and it is dirty but it is also beautiful, unlike Gothenburg.

The women were great but there is more to life.....I mean who wants an argument in two cities?

Got to agree with you there fella!! But i do also agree there isn't a great deal to do or fancy architecture. I love it out there, but i suppose living and working out there gets you to know all of the best places to go ect, which you can't do on a weekend trip.

Why not? That's generally what post-war Britain was built of.

Basildon for instance - until they learnt about concrete cancer and had to pull all the housing estates down.
