Sounds like a close family dinner party at a classy restaurant with some old friends of theirs in attendance along with a suitable gift like an engraved silver tray with names of all those attending?

For a 50th wedding anniversary I'd spend the £800 on a single day or evening that will be truly memorable and impossible to better (e.g. top notch dining in a michelin star restaurant - Gordon Ramsay's if you can get a reservation), rather than try to make a week out of it and end up with something average whose memory quickly fades away.

I think that if you send a copy of their marriage certificate to Buckingham Palace that the Queen will send them a personal card on the anniversary date. I arranged it for my Grandparents and they absolutely loved it.
