At least they have had a couple of days advance notice to get the hell out of there, and the vast majority have heeded those warnings. But I was surprised to hear on Radio 5 that some people had chosen to stay. One woman said that her house is supposed to be hurricane proof, so she decided to stay. But not to worry, she had stocked up on lots of provisions, had a generator and a radio for when the TV goes off air.

Would you risk your life because your house is "supposed" to be hurricane proof?

Its a worry alright. Maybe one they they will associate climate change with their excessive use of energy.

yes but the Americans do daft things like chase tornados, so staying to see if your house is "hurricane proof" is fairly normal for them...

I remember seeing the aftermath of another hurricane (on the tele) where a 2x2 length of wood had been punched through a brick wall. Unless there are in a reinforced concrete structure, anything else could be destroyed.

And the wind may not be the biggest killer. New Orleans is on target for a direct hit which means storm surges which could flood the city for weeks. If you are in your "hurricane proof" home and the water reaches ceiling level, you're in trouble just a tad!

Looks like New Orleans will get it in the neck.

If you've ever been there you will know just how old and rickety many of the buildings are. Also how close to sea level the old town is.

Sea to the South, Mississipi River to the East and a huge Lake to the North If I remember right

New Orleans is 2 meters below sea level and they're expecting a storm surge of 30 feet - The maths aint looking good

Much of the housing there is nothing more than wooden shacks in the poor suburbs. I wouldn't fancy my chances in one of those in 140mph winds.

Everyone seems to be heading for the Superbowl - one of the very few modern structures.

You have to hope the authorities have got it right - but I seem to remember the Superbowl was fairly low lying - I must have it wrong but I'm sure I remember going slightly down hill to get to it - Although there's always a certain amount of drink involved with New Orleans .

Ah... the British art of understatement.

The next few hours should tell the story. Most of the city has lost power already and they are predicting wide spread flooding if (when) the defences are breached.

The Superdome is now around half full. Considering they are expecting the lower tiers to flood, it will be pretty cramped on the upper floors. Remember, the flood water will contain sewage, chemicals, animals and other debris. Plus they asked people entering the Superdome to bring their own food and water, it is a "shelter of last resort". I wouldn't want to be inside when the ventilation system fails and the lights go out...

Downtown New Orleans is mostly below sea level, protected by levees. They have to run pumps as a routine measure every time they receive over 1in of rainfall within a short period just to pump the water out.

I fear a lot of people will lose their lives and property, I always wanted to visit New Orleans too

I left Florida on Thrusday afternoon and headed back to the UK just as Katrina was heading towards the Gulf of Mexico.

It's not looking good for New Orleans and surrounding areas

I found this street webcam which is in New Orleans, its situated on a place called "Cat's Meow".

Theres some awesome satellite loops of the hurricane, i'll try and dig them out

Here's the street cam link >>>> http://www.nola.com/beadcam/

A section of the Louisiana Superdome's roof is ripped open by Hurricane Katrina

There's worry now that toxic chemicals will get into the city's water

Martial Law now declared in New Orleans. Levee break at 17th St Canal now worsening No-one now being allowed to enter the city so it looks like those trapped in their lofts or on rooftops are now on their own, or at least will be for some time. God knows where they're planning on moving people inside the Superdome too (or how they plan on moving the thousands of people).

2 things about this disaster.
1. Is the amazing power of mother nature, some of the scenes on New Orleans on TV resemble Hiroshima.
2. As the worlds last and only super power, don't you think the authorities are struggling to cope? Reading some of the local news websites, it appears that society has broken down there, and they're struggling to re-establish law and order. Too many national guards sent to Iraq maybe?

New Orleans was a pretty lawless place before any disaster .

I'm sure it was the US Murder capital for a while !

RE Mother Nature - US haven't learnt from King Kanute - Building a city surrounded by the Sea / Lakes / Largest US River below sea level was always gonna have long term difficulties .

Trouble is when the city was first founded, issues like coastal wetland erosion weren't really contemplated or understood. Remember, most of the Netherlands is below sea level too.

Unfortunately the poor are suffering whilst the criminals are stealing guns from Wal Mart and running riot.

Shame Bush and his 'team' are too busy cracking one off regarding Middle-East Oil in Iraq. Feel sorry for the people them selves, but not so for the government and the forth coming economic implications-tossers.
