Ah well... I knew my lucky streak had to end sooner or later. I just found this rather gruesome surprise in the corner of the tank. Its the smallest red belly who always got picked on. It must have happened last night sometime...
In 2 years of ownership this is my first casualty and he was one of the ones I raised from a baby.![Frown](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/frown.gif)

Are you buying a new one or is it not wise to buy put a new fish into an already established tank?

I wasn't surprised it happened to the fish in question, he was a bit of a runt

Back on topic.
ajm - any Idea why it's taken so long for the others to decide the runt was just their next meal ?
Is it likely to be some sort of change to their environment - or did you just not feed them on time

They take pops at each other all the time, maybe he didn't quite move in time and the other fish got a big enough chunk out of him to envoke a feeding response.
This is the nature of the beast so to speak, it is rare to find a specimen in the wild withut the odd nip here and there.

But when the chips are down everybody's fair game as the next meal (it would seem).
Or is it more a case of the "nutter" fish will have a nip at the big prey in the hope the others will join in at some point ?

If you scare them they will huddle together... come back an hour later and they will be sqabbling again!

I have to say that I have seen similar behaviour when having a large (8 ish) shoal of oscars (somewhat grumpy large cichlids) http://www.worldcichlids.com/gallery...pics/Oscar.jpg
In order for breeding pairs to form a good strategy is often to have a large shoal and then let the fish determine for themselves who they pair off with. Rather than 'hope' that you have a male and female to start with.
What I have often seen is that after several months of having juvenile specimens one pair will often decide that the entire tank is their own territory and as a consequence will chase everyone away ...including me
What you will also see though is that even the non paired fish as well as the pair that now 'own' the tank will select one or two fish that will get bullied. These bullied fish are not always the smallest or slowest but there is something about them that the other fish select that i can never determine what it is that they should become victims. It is often very quickly too.
I know they are just fish but for us fish keepers its very sad.![Frown](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/frown.gif)
