Supermarket checkout staff.
Walked down to my local Sainsbugs last night for a half pound pack of butter as we'd run out. Got to the till, put my butter down on the conveyor thingy and the girl serving says to me "Would you like any help with your packing sir".
FFS, surely she could see I was'nt a thalidomide or that I still had full use of my arms.I had just ONE pack of butter FFS. Are these people just stupid or trained to act like robots when a customer comes along.
And why are all the staff now referred to as colleauges instead of staff on the tannoy announcements.
I dont use supermarkets very often. Now I know why.

Its like where I work, we do things a bit differently to the supermarket approach. Where I ask people if they would like a receipt or a bag. As the walk to their care is usually about 10ft and they only have a few items.
95% of the blokes dont take a bag and about 75% of the women do, with about 20% of the women making a face as if to say, you don't give out bags as standard...
Society of today is so wasteful it annoys me. We reuse just about every box and piece of packaging that comes into our shop, not because we are recyling conscious though, but because my boss is a penny counter and doesnt like buying them when we can reuse the stuff which products come in.
Rant over

Chip, I think you're over-reacting a tad mate. The girl was clearly concerned that an elderly gentleman like yourself may require a little assistance. Now, because of your ageist slur. She'll go and kick over some old people.
I hope your satisfied!
Actually, in my experience their idea of "Helping you pack" is just the order things are on the conveyor belt. So eggs at the bottom, bleach at the top.

I'd have said "Yes please"........... and stood there, inspecting my nails or something...... (besides, I can never open those f^&king bags!!!)
Yes, trying to be helpful - nowt wrong with that, but common sense should prevail!!!

Hello
It's standard in America. Even though it takes considerably longer at the checkout. If I try to do it, they get all offended.
Sainsbury's made a big deal a while ago about the fact that they will help you pack.

I used to work at Sainsburys. They started calling people colleagues years and years ago. Introduced in 2001 I think. As for her mistake in terms of offering to pack your single item of shopping - It gets drummed into them that they must always ask. Imagine sitting in the same spot, scanning things over and over for a 4 hour stint. Does tend to numb the mind a bit mate.
What annoys me is the cocky young lads you get there who obviously dont care less. Had my credit card snatched out my hand today at the supermarket and the bloke didn't even feel the need to stop his conversation about his drunken night out with a 'colleague' as he handed me my recepit. I quite enjoyed letting him know his mistake, but rudeness does tend to annoy me more than somebody offering help when it might obviously be not required.

Yeah but compared to the pond life that works in your average sports shop chain the Sainsburys staff are brilliant, the ones in JJB near us consist of monosylabic retarded lads and chavettes covered in love bites to busy to break off from their chat to help.

the asda near me does not ask, they just pack your stuff anyway
when its busy they have trained chimps/boyscouts etc etc in to give a hand
1st time i went down south to Reading i popped into asda and stood there for a bit wondering why they were not packing my bags
they just wanted to sit there like battery chickens and cluck out the price of your recipet

I am surprised that you feel you have to castigate her for being helpful. They always ask that in Sainsbury's.
I find Sainsbury's is one of the better supermarkets with an excellent choice too.
