Default Stealth tax rant

It's not just the price of petrol, at least you can control that to an extent by limiting your driving, driving slower etc.

what really winds me up is the little additions they throw in quietly, hoping nobody notices.

MOTs have gone up to £60, plus a charge for a retest. How is it suddenly more expensive? Are they trying to get us in newer cars so we pay more tax?

DVLA are proposing to charge £4.95 for SORN. It know it's not a lot of money, but why should you have to pay anything to keep a car of the road, just so you can have a little bit of paper 'they' want you to have?

Scrapping cars between now and 2007 will cost £150. From 2007 manufacturers take responsibility. I know it's for environmental reasons, but it's a PITA if, like me, you tend to run old cars into the ground. They'll just end up getting dumped.

Look at the minimum wage, it due to go up again in october, I increase my staffs wages every year so that the minimum wage does'nt creep up on what they are paid. As the minimum wage increases the staff end up with just £2.00 extra a week and the rest is paid on tax and NI.

I do agree with a set minimum wage as there are some ******* empployers out there, who would pay people peanuts, but the more people earn the more tax they pay.

They are sneaky and underhanded but who is better? Tories? Lib Dems?

My vote goes to the monster raving loony party, they would probably do a better job!

60quid?!! Surely not all garages are charging that much? Last MOT I had done was only a year or 2 ago and Im sure it was about 30quid!

I cant believe the London congestion charge has jumped to 8quid tho - thats a 60% increase, and it was too much at 5quid IMO! Only really hits businesses who either start to struggle or pass the costs on to customers.

Mine just cost £35 - asked dealer to sort it while in for the service.

I have heard it's going up to £60 quid though - and they already have started charging for re-tests

Went up last month, meant to get mine done, but couldn't fit a fog light in time!
DVLA sets the price, but some garages do them slightly cheaper, and presumably make it up on the cost of the work

The congestion charge went up because it was costing more to administer than they were getting in charges.

Rip off

They've computerised the MOT system so you can't pass/fail a car til 45mins after you logged it onto the system, hence MOTs now take longer and garages are charging more. The 'slots' to MOT a car only cost the garage £2 or 3 each, plus their training and licencing costs. Not all garages have moved onto the new system yet so find one who hasn't quick

MOT's will eventually go up to £85 in a year or two. If your car fails (which mine invariably do cos they're old) you have to have the work done and retested within 48 hours and pay another £85 - its all linked straight through to the DVLA via computer so they know its failed.

Dont you just love living in the UK, what a place!!

So in 10 years time when no-one can afford petrol/MOT's, but we dont have a decent public transport system, and smoking is banned in ALL places, where will all the gov't income come from? No-one will be able to afford to drive to work, so we will all earn a meaningless wages so no income tax, no tobacco tax, no fuel tax.

I'm just wondering when the bar coding will begin?
