Wages...wtf ?
Is it jus me but...I thought until very reciently that for a starting career wage that 18k was ok, then i worked it out after tax etc an it would be about £230 take home per week (unless i worked it out wrong).......i cant believe it !
I could do a completely unskilled job, an go home every day without a second thought about work for the same bloody money...?!?

yeah youve worked it out wrong, roughly i get it to about £260 (deducting tax and NI), will depend on tax code though.
but unskilled jobs paying £260 a week are still pretty plentiful, if you dont mind shifts or 40/45 hours weeks, lots of my friends do it. and like others have said have been doing it since they where 18 theyre all 26/27 now and apart from a few are still on the same wage (plus inflation rises, and some years they dont even get them!!)
compared to an air con office, 37 hours a week, 30 days leave a year, on flexi time, with an hourly rate nearly double theirs. I think ill take the career thank you very much. Yet when i started i was only on £14.5k (works out at £17.2k in todays money taking inflation into account)
Take the career

Can I have your job please? Can't seem to find a job that's 37hrs/week, every one I've ever had says that on the contract, then expects you to work yer *** off...
..and i have a career! (allegedly) I'm guessing you're not in IT!!!
BUT the point is right.. it's the potential that counts

If you want to earn more become self employed - effort=money - doesn't matter what you do - window cleaning is hardly a skilled job. Our window cleaner charges £10.00. He does about 8 houses an hour, works 60 hours a week - fair enough he wont do 8 houses every hour, every day of every week, but he drives a new 911, lives in a 400k house and has a 30k mortgage. Start up costs - a ladder and a bucket and lots and lots of effort calling at every door to see if you can generate some business. I started an IT career on 9k - this went to 14k, 20k and then 26k within 18 months. Got up to about 40k within 5 years. You wont get that sort of progression as a plumbers mate

I've always found my take home to be about 2/3 of gross pay by the time my pension contributions are taken into account. Gets worse when you start to pay 40% tax though.
I also started on around 14k 11 years ago, electronics engineer, around 20k seems the norm for our industry now so 18k sounds alright. If you're any good, like I am , then the pay should increase well above the rate of inflation as you get experience and promotions.

I do tend to agree though that living on any less than £35k is difficult if you want to buy your own house give the current state of play, and it won't be anything paticularly nice / sizeable for that. I can't get the kind of place I want, nothing too impresive just a reasonable semi with 2-3 bedrooms, for what I earn and its quite a bit more than that. Still the crash is just around the corner

A friend of mine spent 4 years at Uni and ended up working for the government for 19k. I used to take the **** a little about his crap salary and working for B. Liar and now at 27 he earns £350.oo per day thanks to the training he got in his 19k job. If you learn the required skills money is there if not work hard and get lucky.
