US suspend fuel tax as oil prices rise
At least one government knows what to do
US STATES SUSPEND FUEL TAXES
Rapid responses to high prices over the pond
33p/litre is just too much
The response of some US states to high fuel prices, where it's now around $3 per US gallon -- about 33p per litre -- has been to drop fuel taxes altogether. According to one report, in Georgia, the governor has suspended the 7.5 cent tax lasts until the end of the month and set up a special legislative session to consider additional relief.
Other states looking to take action include New York, Michigan, Tennessee, Massachusetts, Washington and Maine.
States with a percentage sales tax in addition to a per-gallon tax have reportedly been reaping a windfall as a result of high petrol prices.
Now, does that set a good example?

Spoke to a friend in new york earlier.
All the taxi drivers there are complaining and trying to put a surcharge on every journey to cover the increased fuel price.
They are complaining because they are almost at.....wait for it....... a whopping $3 a gallon
Makes the £56 it cost to fill my tank earlier today look even more stupidly expensive than it actually is.

That's what I like about the Yanks - LOOK AFTER NUMBER ONE - bugger the fact that cutting tax on petrol will force up demand in the US and the US companies will source even more petrol from europe and push OUR prices up even further. 33p/ltr, pooh things, how can they cope? If you want to protest, do it outside the Yank embassy - they are having a bigger effect on world oil prices than our govt - and ask them to not put our petrol prices up (indirectly) by cutting the tax on their fuel and therefore creating more demand. Maybe you could ask them to consider using smaller cars too, after all per head of population, the US is THE biggest polluter on the planet. that is something that the yanks don't give a toss about either. as long as i'm alright jack - stuff the rest of you.

Oh, thats right - they do to fund everything else rather than fix things properly.
Just 'cos the conservatives screwed up does not give Labour carte blanch to carry on. I hoped they would make things better and learn from previous governments mistakes - How wrong was I???

Actually the fuel tax escalator was stopped - I think by Labour getting to power.... I could be wrong though. As Imlach keeps saying in all these fuel price threads, the government have got a fixed tax price on fuel, its the VAT tax take which rises and falls with pump prices.

Hmmm, I think you are wrong on that Dr Hu. I know that Labour hiked up the fuel duty several times since they came into power. I don't know if they scraped the fuel escalator or not to be honest. They increased the duty, probably under a different name with some nice spin attached

Have a look at
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_depth/...sis/933648.stm
Quote"When the Conservatives left office in 1997, the escalator was at 5% and had contributed a 11.1 pence rise to the cost of unleaded fuel. Tax as a proportion of total cost stood at 76.3%.
Labour's record
On taking office, the new chancellor Gordon Brown increased the fuel escalator further and put three pence onto a litre of petrol in his first Budget. That pushed taxes up to 81.5% of the total price of fuel.
While duty rose by two pence a litre as part of the 2000 Budget, Gordon Brown also scrapped the fuel price escalator, saying that future increases would be decided on the basis of the "due Budget process".
At the time, and perhaps rather ironically given current events, the AA said that it was the first budget in seven years in which "drivers can take some heart".
According to the Tories this isn't good enough.
They say that since Labour came to office, the petrol pump price of unleaded petrol has risen by around 71%.
And while there have been large jumps in the price of oil, the party blames what it says is Labour's 16p per litre rise in taxes."
End quote
Hardly stopped it when they took to power in '97, removed it after the 2000 budget and just kept increasing the margin, a bit like the esclator really!
