Default Do you need a TV License for.....

a TV in your car ?

Or are you covered under your house TV License ?

The thought occurred to me the other day, cos you see that many cars with tv screens

I have screens, but its for DVD only, dont have a TV tuner

Got a factory fit TV in my 740. I 'assume' that your house licence covers you. Either that or you don't need one. I'm pretty certain you don't need one for the car itself!

If there's no tuner, you don't need a license, IIRC

no, isnt the TV licence more of a broadcasting licence? so unless you have a massive ariel on your roof and picking up the BBC I dont think you need 1.

No TV tuner = no TV licence required.

Even if you did have a tuner, it's covered provided that the set runs off batteries and isn't plugged into the mains - strange but true.

Caravan TVs are covered by the owners home TV licence. Unless they are pikeys in which case I doubt they bother with one at all.

So I expect the same applies for cars.

BTW I don't own a caravan, parents do, pesky shed draggers

I wondered the same a while back but didn't look into it, so you've prompted me to look on the licensing web site. extract from TV licensing web site -
"...if the TV in your static caravan or mobile home is never in use at the same time as your TV at your main home, you don't need a separate licence. But you do need to complete a declaration form and return it to us so that we can update our records"

there is no easy-to-find specific reference to car tv's so logically, this shoul;d be treated as a mobile tv, ie in a similar way to one in a caravan. ...so if you have a tv in your car then strictly speaking you should notify the tv licensing people and never use your home tv(s) at the same time as your car tv.

TV licence is a waste of money IMO. What do you get for your 100quid odd? Extremely biased and painfully politically correct pro-government programmes and news? Fantastic

Fairplay to anyone who doesnt bother paying it.

At least with Sky you only pay for it if you want it...

But its true its nice to have ad-free radio though. Not worth 100quid a year for that tho.

My point being that if you never watch BBC channels you still have to pay the licence fee anyway.

If you ever had the misfortune to watch foreign channels you'd stop whingeing pretty quickly. Are you saying that you never listen to any BBC radio nor watch any BBC television or even look at any of their websites. Irrespective of that, it is a valuable educational tool in many instances and certainly don't begrudge paying it.

Maybe I should watch it more often and improve my grammar.

I must admit, the TVL website is pretty ****e. However, if you look on the back of your current TV licence, it says:

"What this licence also allows

Installation/use (a) in a vehicle, boat or caravan used for touring from place to place..."

so as long as you ain't in a static caravan (although boats seem ok), then even with a tuner you are fine (so long as you are a named licence holder).

I guess that also implies that someone with a (signal capable) TV fitted to their car but who does not have a TV licence can only turn it on if there is a paid-up licence holder present

I disagree. I can put up with, and sometimes enjoy, TV adverts. However radio adverts drive me insane within seconds and happily pay my licence fee to not hear some local double glazing firm running the same ad a billion times a day.

In fact, I'd probably pay £200 if they ditched Sara *** and Tim Westwood off Radio 1
