Question Have you ever put a car on its' roof??

On my way home over the weekend, yet ANOTHER car over turned in the forest near to where I live. This time it was a Volvo. No idea how it got there, got to have been at least 30 feet away from the road. No other cars involved and on a straight bit of road too.

Got me wondering, when you flip a car is it one of those slow motion jobbies or is it on it's wheels one second, then it's suddenly on its roof??

Touch wood it's never happened to me and I want to keep it that way

Not me personally, but a guy at work did this to his Dads Renault 5 donkeys years back, he smashed it to bits, rolled it 4 times and ended up on its roof (M62 Milnrow turn off if anyone knows it) he could not/would not go home for the next two weeks and had to stay at a buddies, his Dad was gonna kill him.

Another buddy rolled his bosses MG Metro a week after he got it, in Knutsford, suprisingly kept his job!!!

That figures, VOLVO is the swedish for 'to roll'

Rolled my Mk2 Escort several times. Got it sideways, over corrected and span it the other way, wheels hit the kerb which flipped the car over rolled up a bank side over side, hit a tree at the top and then rolled end over end back down the bank, landing on a bus stop. The whole thing was very surreal and in slow motion. Suprisingly, neither me or my passenger were hurt even though the car ended up being flat

My wife put her car 'on it's roof' the day we first met. She was driving around a corner in the wet and lost the back end at about 50-60mph. Didn't have the skill to pull it back together so we went sideways off the road and rolled side over side and end over end 4,5 maybe 6 times. Car was totally destroyed, we both walked away unharmed. T'was a Saxo too. Amazing really.

Yup (at about 20-30mph, surely that's a record?) VERY slow motion!

Yep I've done it, in a Sierra Cosworth. At first it was just a couple of spins (clipped a kerb) but then when the back end hit the Astra coming the other way, it rolled a few times and was stopped rolling when I knocked a lampost over (snapped it clean off) It all seemed to be happening in slow-motion at the time. Especially when I was trying to kick the windows out because the petrol tank had ruptured, and wasn't sure which way was 'up' !!

No, and hope I don't - I worry though as I drive a jeepette at present so there's a possibility if I don't pay attention

Had a 7.5 tonne truck on two wheels once when I fell asleep, woke up and over-corrected

I rolled my Ford Orion in Portugal. The car was a company car and was 4 weeks old! Left the road for an unknown reason and ended up on a steep bank, held up at the top of it by a telegraph pole. The telegraph pole snapped top and bottom and we rolled down the embankment landing on someones drive, the right way up, on a nicely placed rock which punched a hole in the sump.

Phoning the boss to tell him about the brand new car wasn't good, trying to explain to Portugal Telecom that I had broken one of their poles which the Police told me I had to was entertaining! Particularly as they said I couldn;t have broken a pole as no one was complaining their phones weren't working! Fact is the top half of the pole was hanging in mid air suspended from the wires as I had removed the middle bit!

Jeez this brings back memmories. Had a friends Fiat 127 flat out (about 80/85mph lol) on a country road many years ago. Lost it on a bend and went nose down in a ditch which squashed the front in and flipped the car into a few sideways rolls. (didn't count them but the car was quite far into the field). The seat belt saved my life as I would have been thrown through the screen into the ditch with the car squishing me. I climbed out of the upside down car from the passenger side as the roof had caved down onto the steering wheel forcing me over the other side. Very close shave!

I put a drunk in a sierra on it's roof when it failed to stop ( or slow down ) for an island. Gentle(ish) tap to the rear wheel was all it took.

4 weeks after passing driving test back in '89.

Mk3 Ford Escort 1.3 Ghia that I had spent the previous 3 months sorting out with choice modifications. It was a mint 1 owner low mileage car that my parents paid for.

Approaching sweeping left hander at approx. 100mph with 3 mates in the car. I had forgotten about the bend until a mate in the back suggested slowing down. Too late for that as I began turning into the bend. The car slid across the road and hit the kerb side on. The impact shattered the rear window but we were still on the road albeit facing oncoming traffic with a set of headlights getting bigger and brighter by the second. I remember this bit vividly, I slammed the car into 3rd and swerved left back towards the right side of the road. At the speed we were still travelling this put the car into a broadside skid along the verge accompanied by the sound of dirt/stones hitting the underside of the car. Unfortunately for us, we then kit a small brick built bridge which was the entrance to a farm. The car was vaulted into the air, spinning through trees at a height of 12ft before coming to rest in a ditch on it's roof. The roof had caved into a huge V shape leaving only a small place on my side for my head. Being suspended by my seat belt I called out to find out how many people were still alive. I only got 2 replies which scared the **** out of me. Fortunately, the other guy had already got himself out and was OK. The car was almost unidentiable as an Escort and it is a mirracle that we all escaped with minor cuts and bruises. No seatbelts in the back were worn FFS!!!! I remember dealing with the driver of the car I nearly hit head on who was histerical, the parents of my mates who were not best pleased, my dad who turned up very unhappy and of course the police who proceeded to show my dad the skid marks that I said were caused by my 40mph approach speed! Bulls**t or words to that effect were uttered.

Everytime i hear Soul II Soul "Keep on Moving" it reminds me as this was still playing on the stereo as we floated through the air. Ironic huh!!

For me the whole accident played out in slow motion and I can vividly recall most of it. Once I was back in the farm having a coffee, I couldn't stop shaking and hysterically laughing (much to the annoyance of the parents). This was the shock coming out.

Crazy ****.

Really hope I never do this - doubt I'd be around to tell the tale because my head sticks above the roll over hoops on my S2000

I wouldn't worry. Having the hoops there means you car has more structural integrity than a tintop....there's no real strength in the rear window frame of a tintop....it's just psychologial tricks at play making you think you're less safe in a opentop.

Kenny: Look at some of the mashes in the gallery on S2ki - it's amazing how strong the windscreen frame is! I think if you put a line from the top of the screen frame to the hoop you shouldn't be in the way.

I rolled a mark 2 astra .. Set the scene.
Travelling with passenger & 2 bags of off white colourmix (50 Kg each like cement but white)
Country lane , wapping on a bit , but not sa fast as my passenger was able to roll a *** (no a normal one)
Near side front tyre blows out
Wheel digs in & pulls me into the grass verge
We then travell up the grass verge taking out about 20 ft of drystone wall
the car mounts the wall & flips onto its roof
We are now travelling down the road upside down like a spinning top
The force of the impact launched the 2 bags of colourmix @ our headrests, these then burst !!!
Eventually the car stops
We are both hanging upside down & the car stars to smoke, lots of it
I manage to realease my seatbelt , passenger is now panacking as his seatbelt was stuck, (pressure from hanging upside down)
I realease his & we jump out , Looking like 2 Pilsbury Doh Men (covered in colourmix)
In panic we right the car & put it back on its wheels (just the two of us)as it was in the middle of the road, The SMoke was just Rad water , thank goodness.
We were lucky just bruises Etc & yes it was in Slow MO,
Car was Fcuked & it was not even mine !!!
Funny thing was the 1st persons Face @ the scene confronted with what looked like an explosion @ self raising flour Factory with two Pilsbury Doh men stood by

Rolled my first 205 1.9 GTi on a country road. Was quite funny as me and my mate got out unhurt, and some people came out a nearby farm as they heard a bang - and the first thing the guy said to me was "1.6 or 1.9?"!!

Me and a mate were passengers in the back of a Capri, driven by a ropey bird (who turned out to be drunk), scored a lift from a nightclub (nothing else, well mingin) and the silly slapper went un an enbankment and put it on its roof, the Capri is a sturdy car, the roof barely crumpled but the petrol tank started emptying, could hear it, smell it and I put my mates *** out with my hand where it was on the headlining about to cause us to burst into flames, kicked out the back window (the small oval side one) and got through.

Scary, but not as scary as the BMW bearing down on us at high speed, I could hear the abs working as he braked, just stopped in time !

The Police came and the girl driver tried to hand my dozy mate the keys, copper saw this and laughed as there was no way 6 foot 3 of my mate would have fit where she had the seat.

It went to court, we were witnesses but she didnt turn up, apparently she was a regular court visitor with form as long as your arm.
