Default car canvassers - helpful or a big con?????

I have put a number of cars in autotrader over the last year and had calls from canvassers saying that they have clients interested in the car but I need to pay £79.99 up front.

I have always told them I wasn't interested as it sounds like a big scam to me but I am having trouble selling a peugoet 206 at the moment and this canvasser almost persuaded me to go for it.

Just wanted to know whether it is a big scam or not and what other peoples experiences have been of these 'services'

Cheers.

Big scam I am afraid. Know several people that signed up to these services in the past (me being one of them). Got nothing at all, not a single call. They just take your money and run.

Cancel immediately, inform your credit card company, and make sure that the payment is stopped/refunded.

I haven't actually paid yet, he's calling me back at one. Thought best thing was to ask here first and see the response.

Avoid like the plague, they were featured on Rogue Traders who proved that they were frauds.

This has been done to death, but the correct response is to offer them £500 upon completion of the sale rather than the £79.99 upfront. If they really do have a buyer then surely they would jump at such an offer? Or perhaps they'll just **** off and look for someone less switched on.

They were on Watchdog the last week I think (not something I usually watch, but no hotel **** available I'm afraid!).

Jolly clever how they do it though

"We have a number of people looking for your type of car" Number of people? Type of car?

"We coulda rrange viewings for you this evening" Could? I could go skinny dipping with Owen Wilson - but it's unlikely....

Their "buyers" are in fact other sellers who've registered with them - their reasoning being that if someone is selling a car it must be because they are buying a new one, therfore they are also buyers.

Watchdog last week.... They're as dodgy as Mr Dodge from Dodge City, Dodgeville, Dodgyshire, planet Dodge from the Dodge Solar System in Dodge Universe.com...
If you want to send me £80 I will use it to get drunk and get a lap dance and you will still get the same number of people in your areas phoning to buy your car ...
Paypal info available if you prefer to send the £80 without the posty gettign his paws on it
