want a new stereo
anyone heard of 'virtual surround sound' and know if it works?
thinking of getting a new home cinema system that has it,
aparently it bounces sound off the walls of the room to simulate it coming from behind (oh er missus)
any of you lot know what its like or seen anything similar or know if it works, its made by sony, i dont wana go and get one if its rubish, and in store demo's are so dodgy
here i s the link

It's likely to be a compromise. If you aren't too bothered about top notch sound and want to save a few quid or have a misses that is anti-speaker, it may suffice. Personally I'd trade the misses in and get a decent set up

Most mainstream companies have virtual surround products.
I've been into home cinema from the early Dolby Surround days, through the prologic and laser disc days and I'm currently running an £8k DolbyDigital EX/DTS ES setup.
To be honest even the best virtual setups I've heard just give a wider stereo presentation and I've never heard any sound that you could say came from behind.
Virtual may work with some early prologic stuff where the sound mix just gives you some ambient surround but modern films that are mixed for DD&DTS do really require rear speakers if you are going to do them justice.
Cheers

You can get a decent 5 channel true surround setup these days for not too much £. Denon do a good all-in-one package for about £500 if that's what you're after.
