Default Need Help - School Assembly!!!!!

Hello all

As a teacher I have got to do an Assembly to Sixth form mixed students (16-18 year olds).

I would like to do something thought provoking and interesting.

I am running short of inspiration!!!!

You lot got any suggestions.

Cheers
Dan

As they're at an age where getting a job or getting into college is going to be important how about a Big Brother style session on writing CVs, presenting yourself, answering interview questions etc?

I've run a session like this with 17/18 year olds in the past and it was great fun! I got people applying for jobs as Astronauts, Supermodels and Belly Dancers (amongst other things!). Point being that they will happily tell you how perfect they are for that job by selling their good points - all you then do is turn it into a real life scenario and see how it's exactly the same skill.

Big Brother bit is that the audience votes for the best at each stage and the least votes person leaves.

Look at assembly sites online...
I know most are aimed at KS1 & 2... but you must be able to adapt somewhere....

How about posting questions on the Internet and relying too heavily on the answers. The potential dangers of believing what you read

Do something about why the 30+ generation thinks A-levels are so easy these days, and whether the assembly really believes that degrees in crap (read non-vocational) subjects from crap universities will really benefit them in the working world.
I'd be genuinely interested in the discussion.

Waht it costs in the real world without mummy and daddy paying for everything. The importance of further education or getting a job, as it costs a fortune to run a house/flat.

Ther is really no point trying to get them interested as all the ones which have captured my imagination, have left it about 5 minutes after the assembly.

And I am in the 16-18 bracket.

You are better off saying at the start if you don't want to be here leave and then find any interesting topic for the remaining people to give them advice etc in a group fashion.

We used to have a different teacher every day taking assembly,

the one that everyone remembers is where a certain teacher read a short story....

the story .......

one of the Mr men books.....

the whole assembly was mesmerised....

he read the book, and applied its story to mirror certain aspects of our school life.......

was the most talked about assembly for years

You could tell a story about someone with no arms and legs that went on to get seven A-Levels. They always did that at our school assemblies.

Children these days get nothing to challenge their atrophied brains. I would be willing to help you prepare something in relation to the following:

1) A fascinating assembly on the use of gram staining in the management of bacterial infections in fish?

or

2) The ecological impacts of releasing non-indigenous predators into the environment?

or

3) Morphology of genus Pygocentrus sp.

or how about:

4) The use of modal testing to balance dynamic systems?

Let me know
