T'is funny but illegally spaced - mind you it would take a copper in a really bad mood to do the right thing and issue a defective vehicle thingy

If their targets were met, maybe, otherwise not.

The purpose of that law is to stop people making from making their number plate appear to show numbers and letters that it doesn't, because then the OCR programs in the specs cameras and ANPR cameras would read it incorrectly. This is why it specifies not to alter spacing, because people turn 19 into an A and other silliness.

Whilst technically illegal, the plate is still perfectly readable both to the human eye and to the automatons and is therefore more compliant with the spirit of the law than those people who position their drill holes such that a H looks like an A, despite these being compliant with the letter of the law. (assuming no other modifications are made to the plate, of course!)

Therefore a good copper probably wont enforce it.
