But isn't this comparing advance purchase (APEX) tickets for the planes against "turn up and pay" tickets for the trains? If you try booking a flight on Ryanair or Squeezyjet for the current day you'll find that it's very expensive. No cheaper than BA, IME.

By train £200 bought just a quarter of that distance - 1,100 miles (1,770km). Even this was probably not representative of most people's experience of train travel. By booking a month in advance, unusually cheap fares were available, such as a London to Edinburgh ticket for £12.50.

All the fares were 1 month in advance, train and plane.

Even so, the ratio of (most expensive fare):(cheapest fare) is far greater for air travel than for train travel IME. I've paid £300 for a flight that I could have got for £40 if I'd booked in advance.

You know trains are a rip off when you can fly to spain for less than it costs to take the tran to London
Then there is the issue of convienience, reliability and frequency (all poor).
Add a passenger to share your fuel costs in teh car and even at todays fuel prices a gas guzzling Range Rover is cheaper than the train on a road trip

Lot of truth in Ali's post, and at last someone has recently dared to mention publicly the gross amount of pollution that aircraft travel produces compared with other forms of transport. As I said before, it takes the average airliner 40 tons of fuel to cross the Atlantic one way on untaxed fuel and when you think of the amount of air traffic there is, the volume of greehouse gases produced is frightening.
