there seems to be a lot on the news about 'BREAK- THROUGH' medicine
...but is it reality?after a week of cancer cures and now a new break through with heart medicine, its good news, but will we benefit in our lifetime?
i remember watching Tomorrows World and seeing the new inventions but they never appeared on out shelves

The thing with the "cancer cure" is that it isn't, as far as I can tell. There is an infection/virus/whatever which is the main cause of cervical cancer - the new drug prevents this infection/virus/whatever, and therefore prevents the cause. It may cure the infection, but only prevents one type of cancer.
Don't get me wrong, it is a great discovery, and preventing any kind of cancer, particularly a prevelant kind, is definitely a great thing to do. I just think the term "cancer cure" which has been bandied about implies that they have found a way of curing cancer in general, which they haven't (unless I missed something!)
As for time to market - I'm not sure how much the regulatory involvement in the pharaceuticals industry will require companies to do by way of further testing before releasing the drug for general use, but I suspect that is the limiting factor.

Bit like the cure for aids they discovered the other day, only works within the first 8 hours of catching the diesease. Ideal for treating people which get stabbed by needles etc as a precaution.
Not so much of a cure though, step in the right direction I suppose though.

I think media do need to hold their horses here.Medicines do need to go through a lot of experimental procedures before they are finally put on shelves.Media stories give false hope to people. They may be even true hopes but as i said before, various factors including market strategy, side effects etc get taken into account before the cure is out on shelves. What gets me is TBH the shortage of existing medicines and the inconvenience caused to the patients.
