Default John Peel day - anyone doing anything?

As above really, theres loads of gigs on today so what are people up to?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/johnpeel/johnpeelday/2005

We're off to see the Coral in Cardiff, even though its not on the official list. If anyone else is in Cardiff then DJ Scotch Egg @ Barfly is erm 'different'...

Why not? Someone worth commemorating for a change. If people are moved to do it then good on them.

It's not like the stupid government or somesuch has 'ordered' it to happen.

Its a R1 thing, not a public holiday or anything.

If you are into your music in any shape or form, then you will appreciate what John Peel did for talent.

I'll be listening to R1 this evening once the nipper is asleep

I might peel an apple or two. I'm sure he'd see the funny side.

Nothing wrong with commemorating John Peel, good bloke. But I go along with the remarks about Radio 1 though

My thoughts exactlly
His voice was annoying enough !! let alone some of the crap he played.
The "trendy" types liked to think they liked him tho.
Radio 1 is better without him IMO should have been punted to Radio 2 with Wogan

No because you are ignorant of the massive contribution that John Peel made to popular music.

All of the posts in this thread stating that '...I didnt really like his radio programme.... so its no real loss...' make the posters look equally ignorant. Id suggest that anyone who feels agrieved as a result of my post here does a little research before coming the c*** with me.....

Radio one plays utter tosswank and the only thing i ever listen to is dance anthems on sundays sometimes.
From what i hear tho the man done good for his part of the music industry. I dont dispute that.

Personally tho id rather shove a wasp down my one-eye than listen to any of that music

Going to see 65 Days Of Static tonight at Sheff Uni. I was an occasional listener to Peel's show, he had an amazingly diverse taste, somewhat baffling at times I must admit!

jeez .....some rather ignorant/bland people here .......or trolls!

okay he may have been a little arrogant (in an introverted way) granted.
but ffs he had an ear for bands who could bring something NEW to the stage...!!!!!...and the best quality old stuff besides
if all you want is piped boy band musak then OBVIOUSLY you wouldnt find his slot at all intresting

You telling you you prefer Dave Pearce over Pete tongs show?

Anthems my ****, perhaps 1 or 2 in a couple of hours, the rest commercial crap.

There is a lot of ignorance around here WRT Peel, Christ i'm so cool saying that

Im listening to Radio1 now; theyre solely playing records that John Peel liked from bands he championed, all of whom say that John Peel was (singularly) responsible for their success.

Listen, its a who's who of bands that have been influential over the last 30+ years, from The Sex Pistols, The Undertones and Joy Division through to Nirvana and The White Stripes.

I honestly believe that unless you like folk & county music then the music that you and I listen to today would be substantially different and not fot the better.

As an aside, in my extremely limited personal experience of John Peel; I found he to be the most pleasant and humble man that you could imagine.

Ok my points. Whenever i happened to catch peel on r1 i did find him easy to listen to and a pleasant character. I liked the way he switched about and would chuck the odd grimy drum n bass tune in amongst the usual stuff.
but personally i absolutely hate bands, 90% of the stuff that r1 play. Kiss 100 are just as bad they only play rnb now. The key to a good radio station has to be some variety. To me band music is all the same old same sound, but thats my opinion.
Im a dance music person, and

I only usually catch dance anthems cos its nice to hear something thats not usually played. The tunes are usually ok if not for a bit too much yak yak. Yea its now commercial stuff but nice to be reminded of the tunes that made good nites a few years ago.

He was a DJ, it's not like he played in any of the bands or helped write the songs.

The way that Radio 1 were starting every news bulletin about him was sickening, I had to listen to local radio in the end. :dead:

"And here's a track from some south African tribe that nobody will ever hear of again"

After all those 10000's of songs he was bound to pick a couple of bands that took off, hardly a cure for cancer or world peace.
