Talking How f***ing much

I nearly fell over yesterday.

I have 2 boxers, yes the 4 legged type. Which I tend to walk late at night as one of them is a complete physc since she was attacked by another dog - long story so I will not bore you with the details.

anyway got sick of buying batteries for my maglite so decided to bite the bullet and buy a mag charger system which is not cheap @ circa £100 if you shop about. Anyway found a shop that kept all sorts of boys gadets, Leatherman multis, maglite gerber gizmos etc - you get the picture.

Asked the bloke if he had any other recommendations - yeah he says if you want the dogs doodahs so to speak how about a surefire blah blah. Oh right I said and how much is a comparable torch same power etc etc............................................... .

£500 - yes £500

Needless to say I went for the maglite which in all fairness is expensive but who the hell in their right mind would pay £500 for a bloody torch - and we thought imprezas were expensive!

Why don't you just buy a torch that has LED rather than a bulb? Uses a tenth of the power, if that.

Boys and toys I'm afraid Brendan don't find LED's bright enough or have the same range especially when the brindle decides to go rabbit chasing!! Not that she has ever caught one but she seems to enjoy herself and it knackers her out which takes some doing.

http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/showthread.php?t=328019

Dad walks the dog with a socking great searchlight with 12v plug-in battery; probably cost less than £20, though with a 5in dia lens it's a pig to carry! Lasts about 30mins max I think, but then charge it when you come home ready for the next day.

Otherwise, look at the Cateye range of cycle lights, you can get some ridiculously powerful stuff there.

Know what you mean about the search lights - great when they are working / charged but certainly don't last long enough. Good thing about the mag charger system is that it's very bright and lasts 2 hours according to the spec. Have ordered one now but thanks for the cateye idea anyway.

Cheers, Paul

Check 2 things - 1 just how much is 1000 candlepower? It's a nice number, but what does it mean in real life, and 2 how is the beam? You'd probably want a spot for identifying a dog in a field, whereas cyclists may want wide beam, so you might find it doesn't do what you want.

How about THIS then. It HAS to be made by Binford!!!

http://autolamps-online.co.uk/PH%20O...torchindex.htm

Only 35W so draws less current than those 55w halogen jobbies, but produces the same light output as a 300W halogen bulb would, and a nice clean white too.

alcazar, read the OP properly. He wants it for finding his dog, not blinding his dog.

Good point - I might p**** some locals off with one of these whilst blinding the dog!!!

Thanks anyway Alcazar, but it may be a little to extreme for my needs plus the neighbours are cheesed off with the scoob exhaust without me turning night into day for them .

You can get cheaper surefires for a greater output than a maglite, but that all depends on what maglite your talking about.

The 6P is a fantastic little torch, not suprisingly the SAS and many police forces use them strapped to their Mp5's. With the very bright head (120 lumens) the batteries will only last 20 mins, and when your talking CR123's (2 at a time) at £5 a pop, not cheap to run.

I'd love to know which model they have up for £500 though. But I know Surefires are reasuringly expensive though but not that expensive.

I think the guy is taking the p*ss. £500 for a torch? Even our Dragonlights don't cost that much and they turn night into day! I bought my surefire for about $100 in the PX, and it is brighter than any Maglite I've had (even the 6 cell). Obviously batteries don't last as long though......

LOL . Tell you what, I'd have done bad things to own one like that when I was a kid. I did have a Lucas LR700 "Flamethrower", with 55W halogen bulb attached to an old car battery, but it was onl;y for shining out of my bedroom window. It soon ate the battery

If you want torches similar output to mags, but like surefire gear (they are lovely) have a look at http://www.heinnie.com/ not the cheapest supplier in the uk, but very reputable. They also stock other makes but similar stuff to surefire. My 3 watt LED torch came from them.

Three whole Watts? Wow. How do you keep from blinding others?

Think I'll get me one of those 35W/300W jobbies to keep in my car for w*nkers who don't dip quick enough, or who run with fogs on..........

3 MILLION candle power!!!!

I've actually GOT a similar rechargeable one and believe me, these ****'s are BRIGHT!!!

If someone attacks you, shine the damn thing in their face, they'll be blinded (and probably give 'em a sun tan - or sun burn... )

A 3 watt luxeon is bloody bright, you certainly wouldn't want to look the the source. Not bad from something that measures less than 4mm x 2mm

Went for Mag Charger system = 2 hour usage on full charge, halogen bulb unsure of wattage but torch rated @40,000 PBC?.

Took dogs out and can honestly say it is bloody bright - out for hour and a half and torch was probably on for 45mins and no fade at all. Unforthuately it is a bit dazzling for the dogs so they have taken to not looking in my direction!

So if you are after a rechargeable heavy duty torch I would recommend this piece of kit which includes charger + mounting cradle to attach to wall, car 12v dc charger and spare halogen bulb. Size wise its is between a 2 D cell and 3 D cell std maglite, weight about the same - if you look about I paid just over £100 although some B&Q stores allegedly have stocks at £70 although none of my locals did and they were not prepared to even try and get one in!

Will post pics of the pooches as soon as I copy pics on to this laptop.
