Default Q: Omega Seamaster

MY parents have decided to buy me a watch for my 21st/Christmas as a combined pressie.

The watch that I want is the Omega Seamaster 300 M Diver Chronometer (Full size).

I tried one on in a local watch and diamond jewellers this perticular watch was the automatic version.

No what is the benefits of this mechanism over battery? and can you get this watch that is powered by a battery.

Reason i ask is that i want to get the right version of the watch.
thanks
Darren

Automatic - probaby physically thicker. Probably less accurate. Saves you changing the battery every 5 years but instead you're expected to get it serviced every 5 years.

The only thing I can say for sure is that it's a bloody ugly watch

yes you can get a battery version of the above and the automatic version.
Think Omega sold the battery version as the wait for the automatic mechanism was quite long .
Not sure if the battery version second hand sweeps though. PM yoza he knows knows his watches

Get the auto. If you want a quartz, get a 10 quid Sekonda.

The main difference is one is quartz rubbish that keeps good time and the other is a proper watch. I'd go for one of these given a choice of the Omega range

[img][/img]

or maybe one of these

Far more tasteful than the bondtastic seamaster IMHO.

I hear what you guys are saying, if i was to go for the battery operated one, then i might as well get a 10 quid one from a market stall, but if i want a real/proper watch then go for the auto...did i get that right?

quartz - no point to the watch, a 10quid one is the same.

i have the auto full size chrono pro one, as recomended by yoza. it rocks.

its seems that auto it has to be.

The local watch and diamond jewellers that i went into and whilst i was trying on the watch etc..i asked could be get a discount?
The lady had to go and ask and came back with yes you can. 5% was all that could do. Is this good enough. I have heard on here people have got 10% off.

Tomorrow I am going to try some more local watch and diamond jewellers my area and see what they have to say about discount.

I got 15% off my Omega Speedmaster (and the same off my Breitling Avenger 6 months later) at Watches of Switzerland in Cardiff. Basically I walked in and said I'm interested in this watch, i'm paying cash/debit and I'll take it today if you can match the Blitzwatches.co.uk or get close enough.

Go to http://www.blitzwatches.co.uk - find the watch you want and print the page off to take with you. There's no manufacturors warranty with Blitz just their own shop warranty, so tell the authorised dealer that you want to buy it from them and get a proper warranty - but not at RRP.

I would imagine in the run up to Xmas they'll be very 'keen' to get a sale, if you know what i mean.

Also maybe these guys a call http://www.thomas-skipton.co.uk/ , they give discounts on Omega but aren't allowed to say so on their website. They are also a fully authorised dealer. I also mentioned this shop when I was negotiating in Watches of Switzerland.

Good luck.

I saw that, its very very nice.

But a little bling for me and it only looks good with a leather starp in my eyes and i only like metal on my wrist as leather seems to irritate it

The auto will hold its value more but there is only one real reason to buy an automatic watch, and that is you take pleasure in owning a small piece of engineering on your wrist.
I prefer Breitling tbh.
Omega is to Breitling what Rover is to BMW.

I have a TAG automatic chronograph and find the time keeping quite poor compared to a quartz.

Personally I wouldn't buy another automatic watch - even the best ones can lose several minutes a month and still be within their design tolerances. It's annoying when you have to adjust your watch every few weeks just to stop yourself missing the train.

I can never understand why people need to know the time to within a few seconds. What practical use is that?

Omega is to Breitling what Rover is to BMW.
In the horological world they are both Toyota Corollas.

Used to have a seamaster but traded up for an Omega speed master split chrono with carbon fibre dial http://www.omegawatches.com/index.php?id=195 the one in the middle of the link . The seamaster is a nice watch but try and haggle as if later on you decide to trade up it will be worth about £600 in mint condition. Time keeping of the automatics is pretty poor, you can get them re-calibrated but it's a bit hit and miss.

That said I also own an Oris Schumacher LE which is a full size limited edition and that is a really good time keeper and still automatic!!

http://www.oris.ch/english/watches/tt1/tt1_schumi.htm

Ignore the R.Schui connection and it is a change from the Omega which in fairness are now pretty common and copied in many foreign countrys meaning that they can be picked up for £10 - £20 with a sweeping hand .

Theirs loads of nice watches out their and at the end of the day it depends what you want.

One of my favourites

http://www.alange-soehne.com/en/02_watches/index_ds.php

and the movement

http://www.alange-soehne.com/en/02_w...ds_uhrwerk.php

or a Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Geographic.

Tag and Breitling are Casios compared to the workmanship in these sort of watches. Manufacturers like Tag are mass market and most of their products are machine made, whereas the ones I've mentioned above are completely hand made.
