What time are you expecting to hit the M25. Most of the roadworks are gone around Heathrow so back to the usual.

All other routes will have local congestion, be further, require travelling through town centres, other logistical nightmares.

You are really better of doing the 25 route IMHO. Once your past the A3 it's generally plain sailing to Brighton.

If it were me, I'd do:
M6, M42, M40 to junction 9, Oxford ring road (A34), A34 to Winchester, then A272, the south downs road through Petersfield, Midhurst, and finally down the A23 to Brighton.

Not much further, if at all, and the A272's not bad at all, nice scenery.

It is possible but it would be a pain in the rear and a hell of a detour.

Why not drop down the M6, M6 toll, M42, M40 and then on the M25 it's not that bad really as long as you avoid rush hour, the roadworks in the heathrow area are now reduced so delays are not to bad. Once past that section it's usually pretty good unless of course their has been an accident but you could get stuck anywhere.

If you do use the M42 watch for the variable spped limits as the variable speed signs and cameras are now active.

Manchester > Newcastle > Norway > Sweden > Denmark > Germany > France > Portsmouth > Brighton.

No problems whatsoever mate

I'd avoid the Manchester > Wales > Ireland > France Route if I were you

Chief try this you might get their Saturday morning

I used to travel alot from Rugby to Brighton used M40 as quicker than going down the M1. On occasion I have used that route'ish, 7 hrs as opposed to 2 1/2hrs. But it's a free country

To be honest, it looks like i may hit the M25 around 4pm which is near enough rush hour, obvisouly depends on the traffic, but once it took me 8 hours - another time on teh way back it took me bang on 4

I was up near Manchester Airport 4 weeks ago, left at 4pm, stopped on the M40 for brew and was back by the sea at 8.40pm. That was via the M25, now Friday is going to be worse and rush hour starts at 3 to 3.30 round Heathrow but you really should be through the worst in 30-45mins.

Go on don't be shy

M6-M40-M25-M23, or you could possibly come off the M40 at High Wycombe onto the A404 down to the M4 and on to the M25 (cuts a few miles of M25 out). The M25's not as bad as people think. Travel that section most days and as long as you stick to the limits (plenty of cameras) the traffic seems to keep moving. It's only when a Numpty has a shunt that it goes bad. Cross country would indeed be a PITA. You'll not save any time.

Forget all that. Just use the AA route planner and choose 'avoid motorways'.

You should get a nice and scenic route!

There seems to be an accident nearly every afternoon on the M25 between J9 and J5, anti clockwise. I leave for work at 1700 and cross the M25 by J9 and it's nearly always solid.

The M25 road works were not a problem last weekend. Did Ashdown to Herts in 1 hour 30 mins. I'm off to Brighton tomorrow with the camera for a bit of snapping cos the weather looks like it could be good for some moody shots of the coast.

I'd have thought as long as you avoid the rush hour you'll be fine.

And your right, the M25 is a PIA, I live 10 mins from it and I hate it, and never venture inside it with the car.

In the dark it is a night mare, bloody so many twisties. GREAT in the summer day time for the scoob.
You will have eye and back ache if you go this route although it is a simplish route.
M25 to the A3 is the way to go!

anytime before 4:45 should be fine going past heathrow the roadworks are on the tidying up stage. i've been working up there on and of for the last 6 months and i've now finished coz there aint that much work to do

it is fine until about 4:30 then it starts to get gradually more traffic which peaks most of the time at about 5:15 - 5:30 but you'd get that anywhere.

if your coming down the m4 route get off at the bracknell turning not sure what number the jct is its after the turn off for the reading football ground and follow the signs to bracknell until you see the signs for the m3 jump on the m3 and rejoin the m25 you'll miss out the roadworks section of the 25 that will save you loads of time as its definately quicker than goin straight down the m4 anyway.

the a272 route is very nice and scenic but can be a hard drive and after coming all that way i'd go the easy way.
might be worth a go on the way back when your fresh and lookin for a bit of fun

Fly from Manchester to Eastleigh airport for less than £80 on BA then it's a 90 minute drive to Brighton

Hand luggage, just blag it

Some wise words said. Do not use the M27/A27 under any circustances unless you want to watch your beard grow in the rearview mirror.

Like all have said just use the M25, you'll get there.....eventually

PS: Again if you fancy the West Sussex meet is on Sunday 12pm at Pease Pottage then off for some pub grub at 1.

Just been out so the fella coming down for the moody shots is in for a treat its looking moooooooooody out there.
