£2,000 is the retail price for a Sony KDL-S40A12U, but you can buy the way superior (5 starts in What HiFi) KDL-V40A12U for about the same figure if you buy direct here for example.... Your local Sony shop will probably tell you that the kit is a grey import at best, or probably from the far east but the truth is that its simply discounted. Ive just got a 'W' model, which is the 'V' with a louder amplifier and its genuine Sony UK kit.....
I think tha youll struggle to get a well-regarded 37" LCD set for £1,200 but the Toshiba 32WL36 is a What HiFi 5 star rated 322 set that lists for £1,200. Empire Direct offer that set for about £860 and they offer the (similarly 5-star rated) 37" version for £1,460.....

Ha Ha Ha - join the club!!
I have been in the market for a large screen TV for a while now, done my homework and still don't know which way to jump!
Had I jumped in 12 months ago I would have got a 42" Plasma ...... but, now, 12 months later, LCD is beating the Plasmas and High Definition TV capability is considered essential.
I have seen the specs go up, the image quality increase and the prices tumble - a Sony LCD I saw about 18months ago for £8500 which blew my socks off ..... can now be got for a 1/4 of that! (or even LESS!)
I have even been offered a 36" Panasonic CRT - huge thing - but outstanding picture quality .............. for £600 (maybe less tomorrow, in the sales?) If it drops to £499 I think this will be the one until the whole TV thing calms down.
Then again, wisdom says that if you don't NEED a new TV then it's far better to sit it out, play the waiting game and get a better TV, cheaper, later.

Compared to the V Model Pete; the S is ****e. The TFT is similar but the boards that drive it arent anywhere near as good as the dearer model (the S has a VGA input though...). I wouldnt recommend the W model that I have as its little more than a V with an integrated amplifier and some gimmicks, that dont justifty the £800+ dearer price tag.
Id suggest the Toshiba 37" LCD (mentioned in my first post), which can actually be bought for £1,450 right now and it includes a stand. Im not familiar with the other kit so I will buck the ScoobyNet trend and not comment on them....

I researched (maybe not thoroughly) but ended up purchasing a Tosh 37WLT58 - great set, and got it price-matched at John Lewis Glasgow for £1573 - John Lewis standard price is £1995.
No stuck pixels on it either (so far - had it for about 7 weeks). Picture is superb but I dont use the integrated sound, as this goes through a separate amp & speakers. Haven't wired my PC up to it yet, only coz I can't be arsed!
I used www.avforums.co.uk for research - found a LOT of helpful content on there.

If I can get it for €2500, I'll be seriously tempted....
