I've been looking at a few; the only conclusions I've drawn so far are:

- if you buy from a shop, you'll probably still pay over the odds and it won't be multi-region (which, IMHO, is an absolute 'must have').
- the only on-line retailers that are offeriing a significant discount over their usual prices are those which were uncompetitive to begin with.

I was thinking of the Pioneer DVR-230S (no HDD though, as I already have a TiVo): http://www.rgbdirect.co.uk/referrer....UNumber=103500

As a PVR I'd be more inclined to go for the DVR-530HS: http://www.rgbdirect.co.uk/referrer....UNumber=103502 - this model has a usefully large 160GB hard disc and an electronic programme guide, which means you don't need to programme in start & finish times. The in-between model (the 433) doesn't have the programme guide and only has an 80GB disc.

I've always been a fan of Pioneer DVD players, they seem to offer very good compatibility and have always been easy to do multi-region upgrades on.

I'm after a DVD recorder with a Freeview tuner built in. Tempted to go for a model with a HD in as well but don't record that much.

SuperFi (www.superfi.co.uk) has some potential from Panasonic and Sony, whilst EmpireDirect seem to have some good prices but the I'm not sure if they will Multi-Region the DVD player (which SuperFi will do).

If you want a DVD recorder with freeview the Panasonic DMRES20 is one of the best. It also uses DVDRAM. £169 from Richer Sounds.

I have a review of the ES20 in front of me and the moment.

Home Cinema Choice has a good searchable review system.

Sky+ all the way.

I have two VHS video's and a DVD recorder that have not been used since we had Sky+ in about 14 months ago. Recently got my Mum on Sky ao got a free Sky+ 160 Box.

You will need to have a dual output LNB fitted to your dish (Sky usually fit a quad) as Sky+ requires two sat feeds and you will need to have your package upgraded to Sky+. If you have two or more premuim channels then the Sky+ subscription is free.

Cheers

I've spent most of the afternoon plumbing a Panasonic DM-RES10 into my AV system. It looks like a good machine with a few interesting little surprises up its sleeve - not least of which is the way it instantly started communicating with my Loewe TV, downloading all the correct channel names and frequncies from it. I didn't know TVs and videos could do that sort of thing at all, let alone across different brands - and it looks like I can actually use the TV to set the timer on the DVDR too.

Lots of fun ahead, it would seem

found a tasty spec Sony GX300 on Ebay.
Seems sweet enough.
Only £120 too
(Saved £130 as its on special at local comet)- RRP £300

Best bit is that it plays 'backups' in 5.1/DTS and outputs to component video

I am very impressed with my Sony 510S which has an 80Gb HDD. I find that size is adequate incidentally. Much more that that and you tend to forget what you recorded until it is too late to bother watching it!

It has QuickLink so is easy to install, finding its own channels etc and the software is user friendly and easy to use. Also easy to record what you recorded on the HDD onto DVD as a permanent copy.

Minor hijack, but I'm also now looking at HDD/DVD-Rs... If I mainly want to use mine for viewing films, how important is HDMI in the player? As I've seen very few with it, only the most expensive. Or is having it in the TV enough, I don't need it in the player as well?

HDMI is the method of connectivity between devices - therefore you need it on both. It is a 'digital' connection for video signals. Should give a better picture.

Bum. So much better than component? I wonder if I'd honestly see the difference...

So as I have an HD ready LCD tv, will the picture be much better if I got an HD dvd player?
