I have the denon DHT500SD running off Componant cables from the TV/FreeView (picture)
when watching a DVD.. do you press Progressive Scan on the front of the DHT500SD each time?
or tell me when and where/why you use Progressive Scan on the system please
tried this question on AV forum... but i don't think anyone goes on there. lol
tnx

Isn't it something to do with keeping the sound in sync with the images being produced. I could be wrong though!?!

Alright Phil
I take it you never bothered searching on AVForums before posting on there? I just had a look to see what I could find and found your post plus a good explanation here.
Not specific to your Denon, but explains what it is....

Progressive scan as opposed to imterlaced... Traditionally television sets have only re-written even and then odd TV lines in turn; 25 times each per second. Thi swas because it simply wasnt possible to redraw the whole picture all in one go. We use 50Hz mains electricity and you get one re-draw every peak; which gave 25 effective frames per second (America uses 60Hz and gets 30 fps...). This interlaced picture was actually better for television. Interlaced PC displays flicker very noticably and use progressive scan; where the whole picture is re-drawn in one go, 50, 70 or 80 odd times a second.
If your DVD has a progressive scan output then youll see a noticable benefit when using it with a gas plasma or an LCD display.

To put it simple, normal tv is displayed by lots of horizontal lines, these get displayed down the screen first in odds then in even numbers, ie 1,3,5,7 and 2,4,6,8 etc, so fast you dont really notice it. Progressive scan diplays the horizontal lines in order, 1,2,3,4,5,6, again so fast you dont notice it but enough to give you a slightly better/smooter picture.
Hope this helps.

Progressive scan is significantly better than interlaced especially for moving pictures since the response time to movement is effectively better. This is also one reason why Plasma screens are better for a moving picture than an LCD screen which still has a slower response time.
