opticians any one work in one?
hi all
i`m after some new glasses, but with designer frames being over a hunderd quid and i need the thinner lenses too at about the same price again its an expensive game,
i`ve seen some really nice frames on ebay at a great pirce BUT would i be able to take then into a regular opticians and ask then to make & fit the lenses for me? just wondered if anyone worked of knew some to ask before i go into one next?

Interesting concept, I'd like to know that as well.
Technically they should be able to. I think I saw it on TV once, they put the frame in a scanner gizmo which then uploads some kind of program to the lens cutting machine.
Might come down to whether the optician wants your business or not.

I can't see why not - after laser eye surgery I took my old glasses in to Vision Express and they put in sunglass lenses for me, which I guess is the same sort of thing just in reverse.

There was a change in the law years ago which now means that you can buy frames from one place and have your prescription put in at another. Doesn't matter if its eBay or another optician - you still have the right to buy frames and lenses at different places. Rich had his eye-test etc at Specsavers as the company paid and then got the frames and the lenses made up at our usual optician - no problem

Even with "designers", the frames are the cheap bit. Decent lenses (thin, coated, HQ optics etc.) are what bump up the price - even at SpecSavers!!!
...and when it comes down to it, it is the bit that you look through that counts

methodman,
To answer your original question - YES, opticians can (if they want) fit new lenses to new (or existing) frames. Indeed when i first walked into my current (but at the time new) opticians, Scrivens, the manager's opening words were that they don't have any "big frames" like what i wear - it seems that current fashion is horizontal slits rather than proper bins
I did end up buying some awfully expensive Polaris spectacles in the end, but will be bringing in my "old" (big like an owl) frames for some new lenses very soon (for spare and sport use).
