god should be thanked when a loved one survives an ordeal, when one assumes he put you through it in the first place, and yet it is a human at fault when it actually turns out that they did not survive. Should they not equally be in church curssing god for not saving them?? If they had been saved woudl they have been thanking god or the people who risked their lives trying to save them?

A terrible incident - but it just got me thinking about how people pick and choose when to apply their religion.

You can't talk to anybody with religious beliefs due to them all being brainwashed. To some degree there is no difference between those people and the people who flew the planes into the Towers or blew themselves up in London.

Don't get me started
Shortly before Christmas a good mate of mine died unexpectedly at the age of 46. At the funeral 6 days later, the priest told his 82 year old mum who was sitting at the front sobbing, his brother and the rest of the church that we should all be thankful and rest assured that it was god's will and that he chose to take him for a purpose I could have bloody hit the insensitive ba5tard

I had religion forced down my throat until I was a teenager, I had a strict catholic upbringing based on fear and control.
Yet as much as I despise that side of my childhood, I can't fully deny the existance of a god. I think it is a comfort factor.
Why get married if you are not religious, why celebrate christmas ?
Why do we have a court system based on swearing oaths to god, why do we teach religious education and science/evolution in the same schools ?

I personally believe there is a higher power
But I am also of the firm belief that organised religion is no different from organised crime. It's about power and control

Religion is for Sheep.
Those without the brains to work out what's really going on when some **** in a frock tells you that you'll go to hell if you don't do what he wants you to !
But each to their own. If People want to behave like Sheep that's up to them .

Over here in the Eifel it's about 90% catholic and if you don't pay church tax you don't get a church burial, most of the people I know don't understand when I say they can put me in the brown bin when I'm dead because I sure as hell am not paying any church tax

The thought of some ***** saying "Dear old Reality has gone into your care oh great almighty one" is the only thing that worries me about dying .
(That and some w@nker in the morgue taking the **** out of my small ***** )

I got married to show the people that matter to me that I wanted to commit myself to the woman I loved for the rest of my life
I celebrate Yule as the pagan festival it is, not as the religious ceremony the Romans, then the French imposed to kill it off

I've had it written into my will that I am to go staight to a crematorium, and that there is to be no mention of God or Religion in the ceremony

Bloody Hell!
Did you lot all get a bargain bucket of sweeping generalisations for Christmas or something?
I choose to believe in God. How, when and where I pay my dues to Him is nobody's business but mine.
Explain how that makes me no different to a suicide bomber? Or even how it makes my a hypocrite? For that matter, how does it make me a sheep?
Society has rules which, by and large, are based on the dominant religion of the area. The ten commandments are the basis for the rule of law in all civilised countries. So unless you're all professional criminals, you're all living your lives obeying the cardinal rules of the church. Which presumably means that you'll all admit to being hypocrites yourselves?
Oh and remember - heck is where you go if you don't believe in gosh.

Not really looked into it as I'm not intending keeling over for a while.
Mind you I probably shouldn't worry too much as Religious funerals are only for the remaining Sheep - everyone that dies knows what really happens .

If you've met God then I retract my Sheep statement.
If you "Believe" in God because someone has convinced you he "exists" then all I have to say is "baaaa baaaaa"

The most modern thing over here is the "Friedenswald" or "Peace Forest", where you pick a tree for your ashes to be buried under, with or without religious cufuffle, I might do that, which I won't, as I'll die before the wife and she'll probably have me buried head first in a pile of menure

"If you've met God then..."
Pillock.
There are millions of people and things that you've not seen, touched, smelled or whatever but you recogise that they exist despite that.
Unless you only accept your immediate environment as being true, while everything else is an illusion?
As I said, I choose to believe in God. Not because I've been persuaded to. You're entitled to your opinion, of course, but be at least a little bit sensible about your arguments...

Wow. You really are a lightning wit.
And a skilled debater, too.
