Driving licence question

A quicky for you.

I know you have to be 17 to legally drive but at what age can you apply for a provisional licence?

Been a long time since I applied for mine and wondered if anyone knows

I assume you mean car? You can apply for a provisional bike license when you are 15. For a car it will be 16. Not sure how much before your birthday though - have you tried the DVLA website?

It's over 30 years since I had a provisional licence, but I applied a few months before my 17th birthday. The licence didn't take effect until my birthday (and I was on the road at 00.01 on my 17th birthday

)

Thanks guys, I meant for a car. I've tried the Dvla site but no real joy.

I've since been out and grabbed an aplication form and I think it must be two months tho as it says:-
"You can ask for a licence to start from a later date but this cannot be more than two months after the day you apply"

Let me know if anyone knows different.
