currently have a single car garage at the bottom of the garden,with access to rear,can get the car in to work on but a bit of a squeeze really,and now the house has finally been decorated top to bottem,im gonna hold the wife to her word that after thats done i can have a new garage ....need space also for working on my bike whilst the car is in there,so needs to be a double size affair,got plenty of room for one,but wondering roughly how much this will cost?....current one is of a sectional type with corrugated roof and single up and over door,would like to keep the single door opening....just need it to be wider and longer,would anyone recomend these wooden kits ive seen advertised,but what about security? next door has a wooden chalet type,plenty big enough,but has been broken into several times since ive been here,ive never suffered anything,but its well padlocked up and alarmed also,so theirs prob looked a better bet than mine...... if you have any pics of yours id be interested to see the options available out there...also can someone clear up the planning permision side of things..... have conflicting views saying i need to get it or not,and if its a permanant building its needed.but a wooden one would not be classed as permanent?

It used to be that you'd need PP for anything over, erm, 20x16ft. IIRC. But then is it visible from the road, conservation area, blah blah blah...

Mine's costing me £85,000. But that's only because I'm moving house to acheive it and I also get a free bedroom thrown in

I was under the impression that you didn't require planning permission for an extension that is less than 15% the total volume of the dwelling...at least I remember a fuzzy leccture at uni about something like that ...however it might have to be attached to the house.

double check though.

As for cost....materials alone shouldn't be that much, however will you be building it yourself (save some £££)

You can save a LOT of dosh by taking the old one down yourself, getting rid of it, building a new base to your new size, then having someone come and erect a sectional one on it.

Have a look at somewhere that sells them: you can basically have what you want. Two doors, one door, one single sized door in a larger building, personal door etc etc. FAR more secure than a wooden one too, and not THAT dear.

Depends what you want. Just had one built, single skin brick, pitched roof with pillars. "L" shaped 5m x 5m with a 3m x 3m workshop, Double door at the front, single at the rear to allow car to be driven through. Down the end of the garden (50m from the house) which backs on to another road. It is on a steep hill so we needed some silly footings - 3ft out of the ground at one side to get 2 courses above on the other. Complete with power (that was pricey), water, alarm hooked in to the main house alarm etc, it came in at a shade over £16K.
