The 2 Thia fishermen ..............
If they are guilty, then fair enough - kill them!!
BUT, all over in 3 weeks??
They admitted the offence, DNA matched up ............ I am sure that they haven't got a clue whats going on!!
I am convinced that they are 2 simpleton fishermen who have been caught in the wrong place at the wrong time ......... to suit the Thia tourist industry.
Am I alone in questioning the simple solving and conclusion of this crime??

Pete,
For once I agree with you - everything seemed to fit together far too quickly and conveniently.
Alternatively they may just have a justice system that works better than ours!

I thought the same Pete. Catch someone/anyone and make an example of them so the tourists think it's safe and that crimes against tourists are dealt with severely.
If I were the police over there I'd do the same![Thumb](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif)

Took the words out of my mouth there!
Without question.
Mentioned this very thing this morning to a work mate. Seems very sus that they have them banged to rights and off to the needle room within such a short space of time.
Stinks of a setup to prevent any more damage to the local tourist industry. Probably two tramps and the Thai government have promised their families an extra chicken at christmas if they confess.
I'd be surprised if they are not shown tolerance from us peace loving westerners and win the appeal and get life instead. The young girls mother was reported to have said they should get life not death. If the two men die I'll be very surprised.

We should adopt the same policy here i.e. speed of system, everything matches plus a guilty statement given in front of said prisoners legal representatives.
(although they did get the DNA sorted very quickly)
Jobs a badger
Everyone (except guilty party) move on to other cases.
frees up police / court / legal system.
Doesn’t add to the prison population, but that’s getting onto another issue

They need to be killed as it ends it all ......................... having them in prison, alive, will result in some ghosts coming home in a few years time.
I'm just very uneasy about the idea that 2 men will die to satisfy the western desire for visiting the area on holidays.
They could be guilty of course, and if so, i admire the Thia Authorities .... but it's too quick, too slick and just stinks to high heaven!

Even by Thai standards it seems quick.
Whilst i am no expert(really i am not
) murderers who admit thier guilt usually escape the death penalty and get life.
There could however be other reasons.
The blokes bragged to their mates/workers about the killing - if true this is terrible and show little remorse or care
The Thia government wants to be seen to deal with this sort of thing swiftly and with as much punishment as the law will allow. Maybe tourism is a/the motivating factor in this. But without tourism he whole coutry would suffer greatly.
There where riots and a lynch mob waiting for these guys when they where arrested and i heard an interview with locals and a Brit who had settled in the region. All seemed most upset and disgusted this sort of crime is few and far between, the last report of anything similar was committed by tourists.
Convicting the wrong people is short sighted, what is to stop the people who committed this crime from doing it again if they are not the two found guilty.
Just because they are simple fishermen and do not appear to know what is going on does not mean they are not guilty.
I really hope they have got the right people and justice is done for the sakes of all involved.

Yes it was well-organised and slick, should we cast doubt on the conviction because of it ?
Should we not be admiring the ability to resolve a state of affairs with speed and efficiency.

It is worrying the speed of this case, but if they are bang to rights they deserve to die.
If not, the government are allowing a killer/s to get away with murder and possibly commit more.

They are two simpleton fisherman who have been caught for raping and murdering a helpless girl.
DNA matches
They admitted it - and other similar crimes.
The speed issue is to preserve the tourist industry for sure, but if the cap fits....

The impact of the crime on Tai tourism is a relevant factor in determining their punishment and the judge was right to refer to it. HOWEVER, it is ONLY because the crime was so barbaric that it would have such an impact on tourism, so to argue that the primary motive for the death penalty is to reassure the tourists is to implicitly acknowledge the seriousness of the offence.
I agree that the case has been concluded very quickly, but sometimes, you do get open and shut cases.

If they ARE the 2 guys who did that horrific rape and murder, IMHO hang the barstwards, but I beleive the girls mother said she did not want them to die but to get life in prison instead.

totally agree with all the above, a friend of mine thinks that maybe they have told the two guys if they admit to it to get a quick conviction, they will be spared the death penalty......then for the government to stitch them up!
they seem to have admitted it too easily!!

At the end of the day, we're not going to know definitively whether these two are the cluprits. We can only trust the Tai authorities and agree that if the two convicted ARE the guilty parties, then at least justice has been done (my "western" reservations about the death penalty notwithstanding).
This was an utterly repulsive thing to do to another human being and a complete waste of a promising young life.

Katherine was a neighbour of mine and went to school with my eldest so my feelings were at first that it was right to impose the death penalty but after some thought I agree that it may be being done by the Thai Gov just to pacify the tourist industry which of course is wrong.
Katherines Mum Liz had said she wouldnt comment on the sentence but would also not be making a plea for clemency so I take it from that that she OK with the sentence thats been imposed.

I agree with the sentiment that it all seemed too easy - however the whole of the Thai police force was out in force due to the high profile nature of the crime. I would have also thought that there would have been an observer from either the Foreign Office or UK plod.
Having been to Koh Samui several times it does seem like such an unlikely crime with such unlikely culprits - however it could be true. They had been watching pornos on their boat and their fellow crew members grassed them up say they swam ashore for some action.
In terms of the death penalty - the Thai government has been clear it is a deterrent because of the damage to the tourist industry in the only beach resort totally unaffected by the tsunami.
The British government have praised the swift justice, but condemned the death penalty (and personally I think they are right to do so).

Or perhaps the ones who arrested the old man at the Labour party conference? Or the ones who led the 79 year old woman with angina out of her house with handcuffs on?
Or any of those who brokes miners' heads to support Thatcher's goverment?
British Police? Don't make me laugh............trust them as far as you could chuck a car load
