Obviously sit there, but is there any system where the film has "digital markers" that trigger your dvd recorder?

PDC stands for Programme Delivery Control, which is supposed to do exactly what you want; you set the recorder for the exact scheduled start/finish time of the programme, and instead it actually looks out for the markers.

Unfortunately, if you set PDC on and the markers aren't transmitted, it won't record at all.

IIRC ITV doesn't use the markers: the advertisers pressured them into not using them so that people recording programs can't avoid the beginning and end adverts. Channel 4 always used to be a bit erratic as well.
