Take the following to your local VRO
Transfer form
V5 for both vehicles
Tax Disc from both vehicles (Insurance if you need to apply for tax)
Mot for both vehicles
Cheque for £80
Your application will be dealt with within a few days, at which point they send you new tax discs. You will then need to return old discs and new V5 will be isssued.

Does he actually want to transfer it permanently to the van, or just park it there while he gets his next vehicle? If so a retention certificate is probably a better bet.

My v5 took a few days, but it states it can take up to 4 weeks.
Take a photocopy before you hand it over and maybe the buyer will be happy with that until you can transfer it properly.

The DVLA strongly suggest that you do the reg transfer before you sell a car as once the car's in the new owners name, they techincally own that plate. I had this recently when selling my wife's car but the couple who bought it ended up putting it on retention in her name (for which she paid the fee).
Not many people that genuine about though

we know the buyer pretty well, and he knows we wish to keep the plate so that shouldnt be a problem.
im just wondering what happens, does the plate transfer happen straight away ? think we have the old vehicle plates somewhere if we get those re-allocated i suppose.
